Head Coach Sharon Perkins

This weekend, we will wrap up our fall ball schedule and play the final games at historic Glenn Field. We will take on Young Harris and Georgia Perimeter College beginning at 1:00. I can’t tell you how excited I am to begin playing in a new stadium when we begin spring practice in January. This week, we took the whole team over to the new field and I could sense all of the excitement as the Barton Malow workers gave them the tour. If you haven’t seen it yet, there are several photo galleries at www.ramblinwreck.com, including pictures from the tour earlier this week. Most of the infrastructure for the grandstand is in place and the steel beams are already up down the left field line for the indoor batting facility. Even the infield dirt and drainage system is going down. We are so excited to be on campus and right across from where our locker rooms are. Being centrally-located on campus I hope that may students and fans can come check us out and I promise you won’t be disappointed. When we play that first night game, it is going to be amazing with the glistening Atlanta skyline just beyond centerfield.

Fall ball is a time for everyone, especially the freshmen, to get some playing time. We really don’t keep score as they are basically scrimmages. I have been very pleased with our progress throughout the fall and it is just a matter of time until we hit the field for good in January. We have a solid nucleus of players coming back this year and a talented group of freshmen. It also helps us out that we have several players still around finishing their degrees who are able to help out at practice. They are still here for a semester or two since they played either professionally or internationally last year. Brittany Barnes and Aileen Morales played in the NPF, while Whitney Humphreys went to play professionally in the Netherlands. Caitlin Lever as well as our second baseman Jen Yee, just came back from Beijing where they played on the Canadian National Team in the Olympics. I can’t tell you how much leadership and experience they are bringing to practice every day. Jen made a splash right away the first weekend of fall games. Against Georgia State, she hit a home run in each of her first two at bats. Both were even to the opposite field. Then in her third at bat she was intentionally walked so Whitney Haller came up next with the bases loaded and quickly emptied them with a triple. We have also played North Georgia and Jacksonville State so far this fall. Jacksonville State as you may recall was the team that knocked Florida State out of regionals last year and led Alabama into the late innings of the regional final game.

Well enough rambling from me! I just wanted to tell you about our new feature on www.ramblinwreck.com this year. Later in the week, one of the seniors will check in and fill you in on the fall details as well as what it was like to step on the dirt of our new field.

This is going to be an exciting season and I am ready for spring!

Go Jackets!
