Late Al Ciraldo Sr. Inducted into Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame

Feb. 12, 2016

ATLANTA – Legendary broadcaster Al Ciraldo Sr., who was the “Voice of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets” for 38 years, was inducted posthumously into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night.

Ciraldo Sr. was part of the five-man 2016 induction class honored at the Buckhead Theater. The Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame’s 2016 class also included Atlanta Braves legend Chipper Jones, Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Mike Kenn, All-American defensive back Clarence Scott (Decatur HS and Kansas State) and Atlanta Hawks star Kevin Willis.

His son, Al Ciraldo Jr., who is the spotter for Georgia Tech football radio broadcasts, accepted his father’s introduction during Friday night’s ceremony.

Ciraldo Sr., who passed away Nov. 7, 1997, at the age of 76, stepped down from play-by-play announcing prior to the 1992-93 basketball season, but he served as the host for Tech’s pregame, halftime and postgame radio shows. He retired from Tech’s broadcast team in 1997, concluding an on-air career that spanned 62 years.

A 1948 graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in radio broadcasting, Ciraldo Sr. actually came to Atlanta in 1949 as the play-by-play announcer for a syndicated weekly package of basketball broadcasts at WGBE-Radio.

He joined the staff at WGST-Radio and broadcast his first Tech football game in 1954 against Tulane. His first Tech basketball game was against Sewanee that same year. Over the next 38 seasons, he called 416 football and 1,030 basketball games for the Ramblin’ Wreck.

He was recently elected to the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Ciraldo Sr. is the 11th Yellow Jacket to be inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame, joining Tech legends Bobby Cremins, Bobby Dodd, John Heisman, Bobby Jones, Mark Price, Dr. Homer Rice, Randy Rhino, Antonio McKay, George Morris and Charlie Yates.
