THE FLATS – Six Georgia Tech alumni will compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics, which begin on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Three of the six alumni representing Georgia Tech in Rio are swimmers.

Andrew Chetcuti, Tech class of 2016 and a member of the Yellow Jackets’ swimming and diving program from 2011-2015, will compete in his second Olympics for his home country of Malta. Following his freshman campaign at Georgia Tech, he competed in the men’s 100 freestyle at 2012 games in London. He is participating in the same event in Rio and will also have the honor of being Malta’s flag-bearer for Friday night’s opening ceremonies.

Gal Nevo, class of 2010, will compete for Israel. Nevo was a five-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion and two-time ACC Swimmer of the Year at Tech from 2008-2010. He won conference titles in the men’s 200 butterfly in 2010 and the men’s 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley in 2010 and 2011. He also set three school records during his Georgia Tech career. Nevo previously competed in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, swimming in the 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM. He is slated to participate in all three events in Rio.

Keren Siebner, class of 2011, joins Nevo on the Israeli Olympic swimming team. While at Tech, Siebner set five school records, including the 4×100 freestyle relay, which she will race in Rio. Siebner is a member of the first women’s Israeli relay team to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Matt Kuchar, class of 2000, will represent the United States in the first Olympic golf event since 1904. Prior to his outstanding professional career, Kuchar was a standout at Tech, highlighted by being named ACC Rookie of the Year in 1997 and ACC Player of the Year in 1998. He was also a recipient of the Fred Haskins Award as the nation’s most outstanding collegiate golfer in 1998 and won the 1998 NCAA East Regional championship.

Track and field standout Chaunte (Howard) Lowe, class of 2005, is set for her fourth Olympic Games in the high jump. One of Georgia Tech’s most decorated track and field athletes, Lowe was a three-time national champion in the high jump and six-time ACC champion while attending Tech from 2003-2005. Lowe still holds the school’s indoor and outdoor records for the high jump and has competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Lowe placed sixth in the women’s high jump at both the 2008 and 2012 games.

Former Georgia Tech men’s basketball forward Alade Aminu will compete for Nigeria in the Olympic men’s basketball tournament. Competing at Tech from 2006-2009, Aminu finished his career ranked sixth in school history with 105 career blocks. He also represented Nigeria in the 2012 Olympic Games, the first time a Nigerian men’s basketball team qualified for the Olympics.
