Seven Formally Inducted into Tech Sports Hall of Fame

THE FLATS – Five-time track All-American Andria King and two-time All-America swimmer Shilo Ayalon headlined a stellar group of seven former student-athletes who were formally inducted to the 2013 class of the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame Friday night at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center.

Joining them in the 2013 class were Kelly Campbell, a prolific wide receiver on the powerful Tech football teams of the late 1990’s; Kele Eveland, Georgia Tech’s first and only first-team volleyball All-American; Richard Lewis, a two-time all-conference infielder and key member of Tech baseball teams at the turn of the century; and Billy Williamson, an All-Southeastern Conference standout in both football and baseball for the Yellow Jackets. Troy Matteson, the 2002 NCAA golf champion and national player of the year, also was inducted but not able to attend as he competes in a PGA Tour event this weekend in Las Vegas.

This group of standout student-athletes also be honored during Tech’s football game against Syracuse at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Following are brief bios on the 2013 Hall of Fame class:

Shilo Ayalon, Swimming (2000-03) – Photo Gallery

A two-time NCAA All-America (2002, 2003) … ACC Champion in the 1,650 free (2003) … Three-time All-ACC selection … Remains a school record holder in three events … Graduated as the best distance freestyler in Tech history… Holds the school records in the 1,000 free (9:02.69), the 1,650 free (14:47.31) and the 500 free (4:19.31) … Was the ACC Champion in the 1,650 free as a senior in 2003 – one of just 10 male swimmers in school history to win an ACC swimming title… A three-time NCAA Championship qualifier… Was an honorable mention All-America in 2001, and claimed All-America honors in 2002 and 2003 thanks to top-10 finishes in the 1,650 free at the NCAA Championship… His fourth-place finish in the 1,650 in 2003 stands as the second-best finish ever by a Tech swimmer in an NCAA Championship… A three-time Academic All-America… Awarded both the ACC and NCAA postgraduate scholarship in 2003.

Kelly Campbell, Football (1998-2001) – Photo Gallery

Named first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference in 1999 and 2001 … Second team All-ACC selection in 2000 … Was a finalist for the 2001 Mosi Tatupu (national special teams player of the year) Award… Participated in the 2001 Senior Bowl… Played on 2001 team that beat 11th-ranked Stanford in the Seattle Bowl… Part of the 2000 team that finished tied for second in the ACC and played LSU in the Chic-fil-A Bowl… On the 1999 team that finished tied for second in the ACC and played Miami in the Gator Bowl… On the 1998 team that tied for first in the ACC and beat Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl… The 2001 team spent three weeks ranked 10th nationally, the 1999 team rose to as high as seventh in the polls and the 1998 team finished with a No. 9 national ranking… A two-year starter at wide receiver and a primary kick returner… went on to play five seasons in the NFL with Minnesota and Miami… Shares the Georgia Tech single-game record for receptions with 14 against Clemson in 2000… Had three other games with at least 10 receptions… Had 28 kick returns for 651 yards (23.2 ypa) in 2001 and 26 kick returns for 632 yards (24.3 ypa) in 2000… His 1,415 career kick return yards are the fourth-most in Tech history… His 59 career kick returns are the fourth-most in Tech history… His career average of 24.0 yards per kick return ranks as the fourth-highest in Tech history… Ranks third in Tech history for career all-purpose yards (4,472)…. Tech’s all-time career leader in receptions (195)… Was Tech’s leading receiver in 1999, 2000 and 2001… Recorded at least one reception in 32 consecutive games – the second-longest streak in Tech history… Had 10 career games with 100 yards receiving… His 24 career touchdown receptions rank second only to Calvin Johnson in Tech history… His 2,907 career receiving yards are the second-most in Tech history… His 10 receiving touchdowns in both 1999 and 2000 tie for the second-most single-season receiving TDs in Tech history…. Had 1,105 receiving yards in 1999, the fourth-most single-season yards in Tech history … Still active in pro football, Campbell has played in the NFL and Canadian Football League.

Named the program’s first ever and only AVCA First Team All-American in 2003 … Selected as ACC Player of the Year (2003) … Earned the squad’s first ever ACC Rookie of the Year award (2000) … Named CSTV All-America (2003) … Selected as AVCA Player of the Week on Sept. 15, 2003 (only four other players at Tech have earned the recognition) … A three-time AVCA All-District III honoree (2000, 2002, 2003) … Selected as the AVCA District III Rookie of the Year (2003) … Three-time All-ACC selection (first team – 2003; second team – 2001-2002) … Named to the All-ACC Freshman Team (2000) … Named to the 2002 ACC All-Tournament team … Third-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America … Twice named to the ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District team (second team – 2002; first team – 2003) … Only one of three Jackets to earn the Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship (2004) … Four-time member of the ACC honor roll … Earned Georgia Tech’s highest honor, the Total Person Award, in 2004 … Ten years later still holds the school and ACC record for career assists (6,464) and the school record for career assists per set (13.38) – third best in the ACC … Holds the single-match record for assists (93) … One of only four Jackets to record a triple-double (11k, 52a, 12d) during her career … Holds the single-season record for assists (1,905) … Helped the team to ACC regular season co-champs and the NCAA Tournament in 2000 … In 2001, aided the team to the NCAA tournament … Part of the 2002 ACC tournament championship team and reached the NCAA second round … Helped the 2003 squad win the ACC regular season and advance to the NCAA Region final … After a professional career in Europe, she is currently an assistant volleyball coach at San Diego State University.

Andria King, Track & Field (1996-99) – Photo Gallery

Five-time All-American in three hurdles events … Seven-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion in six different events … Nine-time All-ACC performer … ACC Championship meet most Valuable Performer three times (1998 and 1999 outdoor, 1999 indoor) … Set Tech school records in five different events – the 60-meter dash (7.26 seconds), the 55-meter hurdles (7.47), the 100-meter dash (11.26), the 200-meter dash (22.90) and the 100-meter hurdles (12.86) … Won ACC titles in all those events and as part of the 4×400-meter relay … Earned all-America honors three times in the outdoor 100-meter hurdles, once in the indoor 55-meter hurdles and once in the indoor 60-meter hurdles … Finished second in the NCAA Championship in the indoor 55-meter hurdles and the outdoor 100-meter hurdles in 1998, and was NCAA runner-up in the indoor 60-meter hurdles and the outdoor 100-meter hurdles in 1999 … Member of the U.S. team in the 1999 World University Games, where she won the 100-meter hurdles.

Richard Lewis, Baseball (1999-01) – Photo Gallery

First team All-Atlantic Coast Conference Selection (2000) … Second team All-ACC in 2001 … Second team All-America selection in 2000 … Shortstop/second baseman at Georgia Tech from 1999-2001 … Helped the Yellow Jackets win the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships as well as the NCAA Atlanta Regional Title … Had 259 hits for a .376 average in three years with the team … The hits are the 16th most in a career at Georgia Tech … His 109 hits in the year 2000 are the third most in a single-season at Tech, while his .398 clip was the third best average in the ACC that season.

Troy Matteson, Golf (2000-03) – Photo Gallery

NCAA Champion in 2002 … First-team GCAA All-American in 2002 and 2003, third-team in 2001 … All-Atlantic Coast Conference in 2001, 2002 and 2003 … Won two National Player of the Year honors, the Arnold Palmer Award and the Byron Nelson Award, in 2003 …. GCAA All-America Scholar recipient in 2002 and 2003 … Helped Georgia Tech to a pair of runner-up finishes, a fourth-place finish and an 11th-place finish in the NCAA Championship during his four years … Also helped Tech to a pair of ACC Championships … Won six tournaments during his career, including the 2002 NCAA title and the 2003 NCAA East Regional title … Had 16 top-10 finishes in 43 career starts … His career stroke average of 71.91 over 139 rounds remains the sixth-lowest in Tech history, has been bettered by just two players since he finished … A nine-year veteran of the PGA Tour with two victories and more than $9 million in career earnings.

Billy Williamson, Football/Baseball (1958-62) – Photo Gallery

All-Southeastern Conference performer in both football and baseball … Became a starting halfback on the freshman football team in 1958 and earned starting positions on the football on both the offense and defense, and baseball team as a shortstop as a sophomore … Earned All-SEC honors in both 1960 and 1961 in football, and was considered one of the two best backs ever to play for Coach Bobby Dodd up to that point … Led Tech in runs batted in, runs scored, stolen bases, triples and home runs in 1961 to earn All-SEC honors … Following his Tech career, he became an Airborne Ranger in the Army and then served two stints as an assistant coach at Tech before going into private business.
