Holiday Cheer Spread Through Annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive

The Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board launched the 16th annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive Nov. 18 and after three weeks of collection, delivered the toys and monetary donations to the Atlanta Children’s Shelter on Monday.

During the donation period, Tech collected over 2,000 toys and monetary donations exceeding $8,000 for the Atlanta Children’s Shelter. Fans were asked to donate new, unwrapped toys at several athletic events during the collection period.

The donations will be used by the Atlanta Children’s Shelter to provide over 200 homeless parents and over 500 homeless children Christmas this year. Collections were delivered to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where the shelter will hold its annual Holiday House this week for parents to “shop” for Christmas.

“Georgia Tech plays a really important part of our annual Holiday House event because they mobilize all the student-athletes, faculty and staff with the annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive,” commented Sandy Holiday, Executive Director of the Atlanta Children’s Shelter. “The Atlanta Children’s Shelter has been so great to benefit from that toy drive. Every year, Georgia Tech brings hundreds of toys that we then use as part of Holiday House and it allows homeless families to come shop and provide toys on Christmas morning for kids. So without community groups, like Georgia Tech, we would not be able to make this possible.”

The Michael Isenhour Toy Drive was founded by former men’s basketball player Michael Isenhour following 9/11 in an effort to assist families impacted by the events. The toy drive began in 2001 as Isenhour was battling leukemia. The Georgia Tech Student- Athlete Advisory Board renamed it the Michael Isenhour Toy Drive to create an ongoing legacy to their fellow student-athlete, who lost his battle to cancer in 2002.
