Swimming & Diving Splits with FSU and SCAD on Senior Day

THE FLATS – Both the Georgia Tech swimming and diving men and women’s team earned a split on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, as the Yellow Jackets defeated Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and fell to ACC foe Florida State at the McAuley Aquatic Center. The women’s team defeated SCAD 219.0 – 72.0, but lost to the Seminoles 180.0 – 120.0. The men’s team beat SCAD 239.50 – 53.50, but was edged by FSU 190.0 – 110.0.

“I think that this was a good test for us. Obviously there was some good competition today,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart . “I think that we raced well, but we still have some areas we have to work on which is good as we get ready to get into championship season. We will start to tune up and focus on the little things a little bit better. I’m excited about where we are and I’m excited for the ACC’s and the NCAA’s.”

Prior to the start of the meet the Georgia Tech swimming and diving program recognized its 12 seniors in Robert Borowicz,Dan Cohen Solal, Andrea Demick,Omar Eteiba, Camille Felix,Alex Goerzen, Samantha Kase,Maddie Paschal, Chiara Ruiu,Kevin Smith, Ben Southern and Madison Young.

Up next for the Yellow Jackets are the 2017 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships which will be held at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga. The women’s event will take place on Feb. 13-16, while the men’s championships is slated for Feb. 27-Mar. 2.

Women’s Highlights

Freshman Emily Ilgenfritz picked up a first-place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 10:16.90, finishing almost a full five seconds in front of the next competitor in the long distance event, and also won the 500 free with a time of 4:59.30.

Sophomore Iris Wang touched the wall first in the 200 free with her time of 1:49.51, while fellow classmate and teammate Laura Branton picked up a win in the 200 fly with her first-place time of 2:02.68.

The other win for the Yellow Jackets on the day came from Kaitlin Kitchens who picked up a victory in the 50 free with her time of 23.36.

On top of her win in the 200 free, Wang also finished runner-up in the 100 free (51.01), touching the wall just in front of Kitchens (51.12) who placed third, and took fourth in the 50 free (23.56).

Branton placed a second-place finish overall in the 100 fly with a time of 55.27, while Chloe Miller registered a fourth-place finish in the same event with a time of 57.18.

Senior Andrea Demick earned a third-place finish in the 3-meter dive with an NCAA ‘B’ mark of 282.38 and scored a fifth-place showing in the 1-meter dive with a score of 249.00 to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Fifth-year senior Chiara Ruiu recorded three top-five finishes on Senior Day, taking second-place overall in the 200 IM (2:07.50) and finishing fourth in both the 100 breast (1:04.98) and the 200 breast (2:20.35).

Just behind Ruiu with two top-five finishes of her own was freshman Kristen Hepler with a fifth-place showing in the 100 breast (1:06.14), as well as in the 200 breast (2:21.31).

Also recording top-five finishes on the day for the Yellow Jackets was Maddie Paschal with a third-place finish in the 100 back (56.65) and Sara Gilbert placing fourth in the 100 back (56.98). Freshman Maddie Oliver recorded a third-place finish in the 200 fly (2:05.01), while Miller picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200 free (1:54.21).

Miller paced a swarm of Jackets in the 200 back, as the freshman placed third with her time of 2:04.78. Alex Rieger (2:05.37) and Gilbert (2:05.59) finished fourth and fifth, just in front of two other Yellow Jackets.

Junior Kira de Bruyn placed fourth in the 200 IM with her time of 2:08.13, while freshman Tamir Gonen Cohen placed fifth in the 500 free with her time of 5:12.33.

The Georgia Tech ‘A’ team of Paschal, Florina Ilie, Branton and Kitchens touched the wall in second-place in the 200 medley relay with their time of 1:43.80, which ranks as the fourth-best mark for the Jackets this season.

The 200 medley relay ‘B’ team of Gilbert, Hepler, Morgan Lyons and Rieger earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:46.76.

In the 400 free relay, the team of Wang, Kitchens, Ilgenfritz and Ruiu finished second with a time of 3:25.90, placing two spots in front of the ‘B’ team of Miller, Gilbert, Rieger and de Bruyn and their time of 3:33.39.

Men’s Highlights

Junior Moises Loschi registered a win in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 1000 free events to pace the Yellow Jackets on Saturday, while senior Ben Southern added a victory in both the 100 and 200 fly events. Rodrigo Quadros Correia took first overall in the 100 free.

Loschi won the 100 breast with an NCAA ‘B’ time of 54.81 and then took first overall in the 200 breast with an NCAA ‘B’ mark of 1:59.18. He also turned in a first-place time of 9:22.76 to win the 1000 free event.

Southern capped off his dual meet career at Tech with a first-place NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:46.98 to take first-place in the 200 fly and also turned an NCAA ‘B’ time of 48.16 to claim the win in the 100 fly.

Correia’s win came in dramatic fashion as he touched the wall first just two hundredths of a second in front of the second-place finisher to steal the win with a time of 44.31 in the 100 free.

In the 200 free, Correia finished runner-up with his NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:37.03, while on the diving board, sophomore Matt Casillas recorded an NCAA qualifying score of 363.75 to take third in the 3-meter dive. Casillas topped that finish with a second-place finish in the 1-meter dive with an NCAA qualifying mark of 326.48.

Correia also took second-place overall in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.86.

Senior Alex Goerzen (49.87) and junior Brian Woodbury (50.11) went three and four in the 100 back. Goerzen would also go on to score a third-place finish in the 200 back with his time of 1:48.45, placing two spots in front of fellow senior Robert Borowicz and his fifth-place mark of 1:50.59.

Fellow upperclassman Alex Kimpel placed fourth in the 100 breast (56.58), fourth in the 200 breast (2:04.50) and fifth in the 200 IM (1:52.72).

Colt Williamson placed third in the 500 free with a time of 4:35.97 and earned a fourth-place finish in the 1000 free with his time of 9:35.44, edging fellow Jacket teammate Brennan Day and his fifth-place time of 9:37.89.

In the 200 fly, the Yellow Jackets had four swimmers finish in the top-five, including Southern’s first-place finish, as Tim Slanschek (1:49.47), Clay Hering (1:49.85) and Brad Oberg (1:51.34) placed third, fourth and fifth in the event.

In the 200 medley relay, the ‘A’ team recorded the second-best time of the season, as Correia, Loschi, Southern and Noah Harasz touched the wall in second overall with a time of 1:28.60. In fourth with the ninth-best time this season for the Jackets was the ‘B’ relay unit of Woodbury, Kimpel, Oberg and Stefan Kranenburg and their time of 1:32.22.

The team of Kranenburg, Hering, Dan Cohen Solal and Woodbury placed third overall in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:04.22, finishing just in front of the ‘A’ team in Harasz, Southern, Goerzen and Quentin Talley who finished fourth with their time of 3:04.55.

*The 200 medley relay team of Maddie Paschal, Florina Ilie, Laura Branton and Kaitlin Kitchens turned in the fourth best time of the season for the Jackets with a time of 1:43.80.
