GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Andrew Kosic recorded the fastest 50 free split in Atlantic Coast Conference history, highlighting the opening night for the Yellow Jackets at the 2013 ACC Men’s Swimming Championship at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

With 54 points, the Yellow Jackets sit fifth after Wednesday night’s 800 free relay and the 200 medley relay. The championship resumes Thursday morning at 11 a.m. with preliminary action.

Kosic, a sophomore from West Chester, Pa., was clocked in a blistering-fast 18.65 in anchoring the Jackets’ 200 medley relay to a sixth-place finish. The relay of Kosic, Nicholas Colletti, Matthew Vaughan and Nico van Duijn were clocked in a time of 1:27.11, which stands as the second-fastest in school history.

“What a great swim by those guys, and Andrew bringing home in 18.6 was awesome,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “It’s a decent start for us as a team, and we’re right there in thick of it. We just have to be ready to go tomorrow morning.”

Tech’s 200 medley relay school record of 1:26.00 was set in 2009.

The Yellow Jackets swam to a fifth-place finish in the 800 free relay as Mats Westergren, Andrew Chetcuti, Yuval Safra and Zach Tillman were clocked in a time of 6:38.14.

The championship continues Thursday with the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free preliminaries at 11 a.m. Finals in those events, along with the 200 free relay, will begin at 7 p.m.

Live coverage of the finals on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday can be seen on the ACC Digital Network on theACC.com and ESPN3 starting at 7 p.m. For more on the 2013 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, head to the official website at http://theacc.co/SwimDiveChamps.
