Williamson Breaks Record on Day Two of Men’s ACCs

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s swimming and diving ended day two of the 2017 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in 10th-place with 223 points, breaking a school record in the first event of the day.

“I’m very proud of the guys tonight,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “I thought we stepped up and took it to another level tonight. They raced hard. I’m excited for tomorrow; I think we get better each day so we’re looking forward to racing hard and competing tomorrow morning.”

In the 500 free prelims, the Jackets’ Colt Williamson set a new school record with a career-best time of 4:19.19, an NCAA ‘B’ mark time that also earned him a spot in the ‘B’ finals.

Freshmen Brennan Day and Clay Hering also both competed in the 500 free prelims, as Day posted a time of 4:30.61, while Hering turned in a new career best mark of 4:30.64 in the event.

Junior Alex Kimpel recorded an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:48.38 in the 200 IM prelims, while freshman Tim Slanschek touched the wall in a time of 1:49.18. Joseph Portillo set a new career best time of 1:50.37 in the IM event, placing ahead of fellow teammate Brian Woodbury and his prelim time of 1:50.70.

In the 50 free prelims, Rodrigo Quadros Correia touched the wall in an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 20.01 to move on to the ‘C’ finals in the night cap.

Senior Alex Goerzen (20.23) and junior Stefan Kranenburg (20.56) both posted new career best marks in the 50 free prelims, while Noah Harasz (20.43), Ben Southern (20.44), Robert Borowicz (20.50) and Dan Cohen Solal (20.72) also all swam for the Jackets in the sprint free prelim event.

Kicking off the evening session, Williamson finished 10th in the 500 free final, second in his heat, with an NCAA ‘B’ cut of 4:19.95. He scored 17 points for the Jackets with the finish.

Correia finished first in the ‘C’ final in the 50 free for a 17th-place finish with a career best and NCAA ‘B’ cut of 19.88. He scored nine points for Tech.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Goerzen, Southern, Borowicz and Harasz finished eighth, tallying 44 points for the Jackets and finishing with the seventh best time in school history of 1:19.79.

The meet will continue with the prelims set to begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET with the 400 IM. The finals are slated to begin at 6 p.m. ET.
