THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s Brad Homza became the first Yellow Jacket to qualify for the 2016 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, as he finished fifth in the 1-meter event at NCAA Zone Diving on Tuesday at McAuley Aquatic Center.

Homza, who was named Most Valuable Male Diver at the ACC Championships, finished the preliminary with a score of 325.65 to advance to the final. Homza finished the event with a total score of 668.90.

“Today, Brad was back to being the competitor he proved himself to be at ACCs,” diving coach John Ames said. “It's a deep field of great divers, and finishing fifth was great for him. Tomorrow Brad, Matt (Casillas) and Nolan (Mallet) will dive platform for the men, and Madison Yong will compete for the women. It's a long three days, and we hope to finish strong.”

“I’m extremely proud of Brad,” head coach Courtney Shealy Hart added. “Our zone is very difficult, so this is a great follow-up to his performance at ACCs. We’re all looking forward to watching him at NCAAs.”

Homza was a gold medalist in the platform event at ACCs, and will attempt to qualify in that event on Wednesday.

Nolan Mallet (27th, 257.40), Omar Eteiba (33rd, 246.55) and Matt Casillas (34th, 240.60) also competed in the 1-meter event, while Shannon Lumbra (240.85) finished 35th in the women’s 3-meter.
