Southern Sets School Record in 200 Fly at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Georgia Tech swimming and diving concluded its 2016-17 season on Saturday, as the final three Yellow Jackets competed in the final day of the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“I am proud of this team. While we are excited to have participants representing our program at the NCAA’s, we want more and want to continue to build on this,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “Our guys swam well this week and got a taste of competing at the highest level and at the national championship meet. I think we all want more, which leaves us hungry for next year.”

In his final race as a Jacket, senior Ben Southern set a new school record with a new career-best mark of 1:42.21 in the 200 fly prelims. Southern finished 18th overall to be an alternate in the 200 fly consolations heat in the finals session on Saturday night.

Sophomore Rodrigo Quadros Correia completed his first NCAA Championships meet with a time of 43.40 in the 100 free prelims to place in 34th-place overall on Saturday morning.

Junior Moises Loschi, who qualified last year for the NCAA Championships but missed out on the meet due to an illness, placed 41st in the 200 breast prelims with his time of 1:58.76 on the final day of competition.
