THE FLATS – Led by junior Erika Staskevicius and three relay victories, the Gold team defeated White 104-85 on Friday in Georgia Tech’s annual White/Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage.

Staskevicius was victorious in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. She bested Alex Rieger by two-tenths of a second in the 50 free, clocking in at 24.04. In the 100 free, she won by nearly a two-second margin with a time of 52.61.

“We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were this time last year,” head coach Courtney Shealy Hart said. “That speaks to the hard work we’ve put in this summer and in the preseason.”

In the women’s 200-yard freestyle, junior Chiara Ruiu posted a victory for Gold with a time of 1:52.82. The Gold team also posted individual victories in the men’s 50 free (Andrew Chetcuti), women’s 1-meter diving (Shannon Lumbra), women’s 100 fly (Morgan Lyons), men’s 100 fly (Ben Southern), women’s 100 backstroke (Maddie Paschal), women’s 100 breaststroke (Efrat Rotsztjen), and men’s 100 breaststroke (Ricky Lehner).

Junior Andrew Kosic won two events for the White team – both the 100- and 20-yard freestyle. Kosic edged freshman Noah Harasz in both events, clocking times of 44.51 (100 free) and 1:40.30 (200 free).

“I was impressed by both Andrew Kosic and Erika Staskevicius, who both performed really well today,” Hart said. “You never what you’ll get from your freshmen, but Noah Harasz, Kira de Bruyn, Morgan Lyons and Brian Woodbury stood out as some of our top freshmen performers.”

Sophomore Brad Homza won the men’s 1-meter diving with a score of 77.50. The White team also won the men’s 200-yard medley relay.

“Overall, today is a good start for the season and now it’s time for us to focus on getting a solid start next month.”

Hart begins her sixth season as Georgia Tech head coach and her eighth season overall on The Flats. Last season, Kosic, Nico van Duijn and Mats Westergren represented the Jackets at the 2014 NCAA National Championships, with Kosic earning All-America honors in the 50-yard freestyle.

Georgia Tech opens its 2014-15 season Oct. 3 at Penn State (5 p.m. ET), followed by a tri-meet Oct. 4 in Annapolis, Md., against George Mason and Navy.
