ATHENS, Ga. – In their first meet of the 2011-12 season, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads fell in a dual with Georgia as the men’s squad dropped a 152-87 decision while the women lost 141-91.

The Jacket diving corps was unstoppable on the day earning all four victories including a school record score in the women’s 1-meter dive by Helen Alvey who netted a total of 310.42 points in the event. Alvey also won the 3-meter dive with a career best score of 308.30. On the men’s side, Brandon Makinson swept the diving events with scores of 347.25 in the 1-meter and 358.35 in the 3-meter dive.

“In a sport like diving, it is always tough to predict how the athletes will handle themselves at the first meet,” said diving coach John Ames, “especially when the first meet is against a team like UGA. I am very proud of how the divers handled themselves. I believe this is the first time the men and women together swept all of the diving events against Georgia.”

Also seeing success on the day were the Jacket sprinters including Alexis Weber who finished in the top-three in both of her events on the day registering a time of 1:52.34 in the 200-Free and a second place finish and time of 51.55 in the 100-Free.

On the men’s side of things, Nigel Plummer led the way for the Jackets with a second place finish in the 50-Free with a time of 20.83 while Andrew Kosic followed suit with a third place performance and a time of 20.96. In the 100-Free Kosic took home the victory with a time of 45.75 seconds while Plummer was the third place finisher in 46.12.

Anton Lagerqvist came away from the day with a couple of third place performances, first in the 200-Free with a time of 1:43.15, then in the 200-Breast with a time of 2:06.10.

Newcomer Nico van Duijn also did well on the day taking home second in the 200-Fly with a 1:53.62 finish as Michael Hart earned fourth in the same event in 1:54.96. van Duijn also netted a fifth place finish in the 200-Free with a time of 1:49.42.

The Jackets will be back in action with their first home meet of the season next Friday, October 21 when they take on ACC rival North Carolina at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The meet will begin at 5 p.m.
