Swimming & Diving Falls To Georgia In Dual Meet

Nov. 7, 2007

ATLANTA- Freshman Christine Chuang registered a NCAA B-cut time of 2:01.71 in the 200-yard fly as the Georgia Tech women’s (4-3, 0-2 ACC) and men’s (1-3, 0-2 ACC) swimming and diving teams fell to the nationally-ranked Georgia programs Wednesday evening. It was Chuang’s second b-cut of the season as she also recorded one in the same event earlier this year at Florida Gulf Coast University. This time surpassed her personal-best by more than a half-second. The fifth-ranked UGA women won 139-94 while the eighth-ranked men’s squad won 134-104.

“I think we did a great job against a very good Georgia team,” head coach Stu Wilson said. “The national ranking did not phase them and I think we made some solid strides tonight. There is a very positive attitude now and we are going in the right direction.”

On the women’s side, the relay team of Agatha Kwasnik, Lisa Pucci, Christine Chuang and Katherine Locker claimed a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:48.11. Elizabeth Stowe captured a second-place finish (10:03.79) in the 1000-yard free to round out the scoring for the Jackets in the first half of the meet.

After the break, Chuang got the Jackets off to a good start as she posted her second NCAA B-cut time. Chuang swam the 200-yard fly in 2:01.71. Kwasnik kept the momentum going for the Jackets as she won the 100-yard free in a time of 51.21.

The men’s meet got off to a good start for Tech as the 200-yard medley relay team of Matt Tang, Micky Malul, Travis Wagner and Mauricio Sousa finished first in a time of 1:31.62. Kevin Morgan registered a third-place finish in the 1000-yard free (9:49.37), while Noah Copeland also claimed second in the 200-yard free (1:40.38).

Sousa gave the Jackets their second win of the meet when he touched the wall in 20.94 of the 50-yard free. Ralph Long turned in a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:06.57 to conclude the first half of the meet.

Following the diving break, Copeland turned in a second-place finish in the 100-yard free (46.50), while Kyle Diedrich and Tang finished second and third in the 200-yard back with times of 1:53.25 and 1:55.72, respectively. In the last event before the evening’s final break, Morgan finished third in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:48.59.

In the one-meter diving event, Hannah Krimm finished second with 294.67 points, while Stephanie England was third with 290.02 points. On the men’s side, Evan Stowers finished third with 351.90 points. Krimm won the three-meter event with 291.74 points followe dby England’s 260.40. Stowers placed second for the men with 322.35.

The Jackets will return to action Nov. 16-18 by hosting the Georgia Tech Invitational. Florida State, Duke, NC State, Miami and Florida Atlantic will all participate in the meet. Live stats throughout the meet as well as daily recaps can be found at www.ramblinwreck.com.
