Day One Complete At 2012 GT Inviational

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s 400 medley relay capped Friday night with a victory to highlight Day 1 of the GT Invitational, hosted by the Yellow Jackets. The men find themselves in second place with 371 points, while the women are in fourth with 169 points.

Day One Complete Results

The men’s 400 medley relay of Bo Hatchett, Matthew Vaughan, Nico van Duijn and Andrew Kosic was clocked in 3:12.99 in collecting 52 points for the Jackets’ cause.

Kosic and van Duijn also teamed with Eric Chiu and Andrew Chetcuti for the 200 free relay that got Friday night’s session started with a second-place finish in a time of 1:19.37.

Florida State’s men and women lead the GT Invitational, which resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with preliminary action. The FSU men lead with 609.5 points, followed by Tech (371), Alabama (213.5), Emory (96) and Miami (22). The Seminole women have scored 515 points, and are trailed by Florida Gulf Coast (271), Miami (238), Tech (169), Harvard (123), Alabama (123), Emory (79), Clemson (15) and Hawaii (6).

Kosic also paced four Yellow Jackets that reached the A-final of the 50 free Friday night, as his time in the finals of 20.07 of good for fourth, followed by van Duijn in fifth (20.30), Chiu in sixth (20.36), and Chetcuti in seventh (20.53).

Three-time ACC Diver of the Week Brandon Makinson entered the meet undefeated on the season in both springboard events, but had that streak snapped Friday. His score of 341.45 on the 1-meter board was good for second place, while Chris Khosravi finished sixth (282.60).

In the men’s 200 IM, Mark Sarman put down a time of 1:49.70 placed him third, while Anton Lagerqvist was fifth (1:51.49) and Wilson Wei was ninth (1:53.63) in the A-final. The B-final saw Andreas Nilsson shave more than three seconds off his prelim time and win the heat with a time of 1:53.47.

The 500 free saw Mats Westergren swim to a fourth-place finish in a time 4:29.95, with Zach Tillman finishing eighth in 4:34.49 and Michael Kenny taking ninth in 4:34.59.

For the women, the relay of Lexi Weber, Erika Staskevicius, Kate Clark and Katie Riley were clocked in 1:33.81 in claiming a third-place finish in the 200 free relay.

Weber and Staskevicius also scored points in the 50 free as Weber was fifth (23.40) and Staskevicius was 10th (23.81) in the A-final.

In the 500 free, Hailey White raced to a fourth-place finish (4:53.59) and shaved more than a second off her prelim time. The 3-meter diving event saw Shannon Lumbra claim sixth with a score of 307.70.
