Jackets Return to Competition on Saturday in Savannah

Jan. 5, 2018

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech swimming & diving returns to competition for the first time in two months this Saturday, as the Yellow Jackets hit the road to take on SCAD Savannah at the Chatham County Aquatic Center in Savannah, Ga. The dual meet is set for an 11 a.m. start time and will not include diving.

“While we have had a great month of training at home in McAuley the last month, we are thrilled to be starting our championship season this Saturday at SCAD,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “We are ready to get back to competing against someone other than ourselves. Saturday’s meet will help us set the tone for the rest of our spring season, as we hit the home stretch before competing at the ACC’s in just over a month in Greensboro, N.C.”

The Yellow Jackets last competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Nov. 16-18, in which the women’s team placed fourth overall (923 points) and the men’s team finished third (890) for the three-day event.

Over the 2017 fall season, the women’s team (3-2) posted wins over Pittsburgh, Northwestern and Delta State in dual meet action and set a total of six individual records overall.

Junior Iris Wang has paced the Jackets this season having recorded new Tech school records in the 100 free (48.23) and 200 free (1:45.67) events, while also tying her own school record in the 50 free (22.69) which she set last year.

Sophomores Emily Ilgenfritz and Caroline Lee have also etched their names in the record books thus far this season, as Ilgenfritz posted a new GT record in the 500 free (4:46.38), while Lee touched the wall in a new record time in the 200 back (1:56.42).

The Jackets’ men’s team (3-2), which climbed into the CSCAA Top 25 back in October and sits at No. 24 overall in the latest poll, also has wins over Pittsburgh, Northwestern and Delta State in head-to-head action this season and will look to continue its winning ways this Saturday.

Led by juniors Colt Williamson, who set the school record in the 500 free (4:18.78) at the Georgia Tech Invitational, and Rodrigo Correia, who has Tech’s fastest times on the year in the 100 free (44.43), 100 back (46.62) and 200 back (1:43.00), the Yellow Jackets have had a number of underclassmen step up over the fall season.

First-year Jacket Caio Pumputis has recorded the top times for Tech in a number of different events including the 200 free (1:36.12), 200 breast (1:53.80), 200 IM (1:45.68) and 400 IM (3:50.36), while fellow freshman swimmer Christian Ferraro has the fastest times for the Jackets this season in the 100 fly (47.76) and 200 fly (1:44.48) events.

SCAD, a NAIA team that competes in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference, returns to action this week for the first time since hosting the SCAD Invite in early December 2017.

The women’s team (2-1), who are ranked No. 1 nationally in the CSCAA Top 25 NAIA women’s poll, will face off with Georgia Southern in dual meet action on Friday night, Jan. 5 prior to hosting Tech on Saturday morning.

Most recently, the Bee’s placed first out of three teams in the Berry College Invite on Nov. 17-18 and fourth out of 14 teams in the SCAD Invitational on Nov. 30-Dec. 3, losing only to NCAA Division II and III teams.

The SCAD men’s team (1-2), who were ranked No. 2 in the latest top 25 NAIA poll in December, is coming off a third-place finish out of 11 teams at the SCAD Invitational. The Bees also finished first at the Berry College Invite and defeated Birmingham Southern in a dual meet in November.

Live results of the meet can be found on the Meet Mobile app.
