THE FLATS – With its last meet snowed out, literally, the Georgia Tech swimming and diving team returns to action this Friday, Jan. 20, as the Yellow Jackets host the Alabama Crimson Tide in a non-conference dual. The meet will be a White Out and is slated for a 2 p.m. start time at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
“We are just looking forward to getting back in the pool to compete again,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “With most of our last meet cancelled due to snow up in Virginia, we’ve only raced in a handful of events since our last full meet in December. We know that Alabama is a very strong team and that we’ll have to swim fast, dive well and be mentally prepared to challenge and push ourselves in every event in order to achieve the results that we want.”
Last time out, the Yellow Jackets swam on day one of a two-day double-dual meet with both Kentucky and Virginia Tech, but saw the second day cancelled due to snow and poor road conditions in the Blacksburg, Va. area.
With the cancellation, a number of Yellow Jackets did not compete and thus will be returning to competition for the first time in over a month since the Jackets swept both Cincinnati and FAU back on Dec. 19.
The men’s team is 4-2 this season in dual meet action and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with wins over Boston College and Pittsburgh. The Yellow Jackets blew past BC 231-68 and defeated Pitt 199-100 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. back on Oct. 8.
The women’s team, who is 4-3 overall in dual meet action this season, will look to stay above .500 on the season with a win over Alabama on Friday. The Yellow Jackets, who are 1-2 in the ACC, posted a 249-50 win over Boston College back on Oct. 8.
No stranger to the McAuley Aquatic Center, the Tide return where they competed at the 2016 Georgia Tech Invitational back in November. At the three-day event, the men’s team took first-place overall with a score of 1,269 points, while the women’s team scored a third-place finish with 909.5 points.
Ranked No. 11 nationally in the latest CSCAA Top-25 Coaches Poll (Jan. 18), the Alabama men’s team is 3-1 in dual meet action on the season with wins over Delta State, Missouri and LSU.
The women’s team is 4-3 in duals on the year with wins over Delta State, Vanderbilt, West Florida and Tulane.
