@GTSwimDive: Lumbra Named Diver of the Week

Jan. 26, 2016

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech diver Shannon Lumbra has been named the ACC Female Diver of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. It is the second time this season that she has earned the award.

Lumbra, a senior from Flower Mound, Texas, won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions on Saturday at the University of Alabama with scores of 290.90 and 293.60, respectively. Both scores meet the NCAA Zone qualifying marks, though she had already met the marks for both events.

“I am so proud of Shannon,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “She is an incredibly hard worker and a great leader on our team. This award is well deserved.”

Diving coach John Ames was proud of Lumbra, as well.

“Shannon competed very well this week,” Ames said. “She was very consistent on 1-meter, and she didn’t let a couple missed dives get her down on 3-meter. She came back strong with her back and reverse two-and-a-half to edge out Taylor (Zablocki) from Alabama.”

Lumbra previously won the award on Oct. 6, 2015, for her performance against Penn State and Liberty in which she earned scores of 281.55 in the 1-meter and 293.95 in the 3-meter.

For the second time in program history, Georgia Tech and the McAuley Aquatic Center will serve as the host site for the 2016 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The Women’s Championships will be held March 16-19, followed by the Men’s Championships March 23-26. Georgia Tech previously hosted the 2006 NCAA Championships and the CRC was also the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics swimming and diving competitions.
