Pumputis Takes Fifth in 200 Medley at FINA World Junior Championships

Men's 200m Medley Results

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –
After posting a top-20 finish his first event of the 6th FINA World Junior Championships on Wednesday, Georgia Tech freshman Caio Pumputis recorded a fifth-place finish in the men’s 200 individual medley on Thursday at the championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Pumputis, who finished in a tie for 18th overall in the 100 breaststroke event on Wednesday, touched the wall in fifth-place overall in the men's 200 medley finals on Thursday night with a time of 2:00.97.

His time of 2:00.97 was not only a new personal best mark, but was also just 1.94 seconds behind the gold medalist Johannes Hintze of Germany and his first-place time of 1:59.03 which was a World Junior Championships record.

The São Paulo, Brazil native advanced to the finals in the night session by placing fourth overall in the preliminaries with a time of 2:01.58 in the morning session.

Pumputis will return to the pool on Saturday when he will compete in both the 200m breaststroke and the 800 free relay (4x200m relay) event for team Brazil.

400 medley relay – Prelims: 9:30 a.m. / Semifinals and Finals: 6:00 p.m.
