Tech To Take On The Carolinas

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will begin their 2011-12 home season with their annual Swim for the Cure meet when they take on ACC foe North Carolina Friday night at 5 p.m. The Jackets will continue competition on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they head to South Carolina for a dual with the Gamecocks.

Tech is coming off of a dual meet with Georgia where the Yellow Jackets saw much success. The diving corps swept the events as Helen Alvey set a new school record in the one-meter dive also winning the three-meter dive with a career best score. Brandon Makinson also swept the diving events on the men’s side of things. Also earning a victory on the day was newcomer Andrew Kosic who took first in the 100-Free.

Friday night’s meet between UNC and Tech will be the annual Swim for the Cure night. The first 50 students into the meet will receive pink t shirts as will any fan to make a donation to the Relay for Life foundation at the marketing table which will be located across from the first entrance to the stands. Donations will be able to be made throughout the course of the meet.

This will be the 22nd regular season meeting between the North Carolina and Tech men’s teams as the Tar Heels hold a 20-1 series advantage. The men’s team has met with South Carolina 10 times in the past coming away with two victories.

The Tech women’s team has faced UNC just twice in their 10-year history with the Tar Heels earning both victories. South Carolina and the Tech women have met just once in the past during a tri meet with Georgia and South Carolina with South Carolina earning the victory.

This will be the first trip for Tech to South Carolina under the direction of head coach Courtney Shealy Hart who is a native of Columbia, South Carolina.
