Georgia Tech Swimming and Diving to go Head-to-Head with UGA
Georgia Tech swimming and diving will host in-state rival Georgia on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 4 p.m.
THE FLATS – Georgia Tech swimming and diving will face their toughest task to date when the Georgia Bulldogs come to town for an in-state rival dual meet on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 4 p.m. at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
“This will be a true test for our team across the board and in every event,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “This meet will be able to tell us where we stand now against top nationally ranked competition and what areas we need to work on to get better as we go throughout the season."
Ranked No. 19 nationally in the CSCAA Coaches TYR Top-25 poll, the Yellow Jackets‘ men’s team is 2-1 overall in dual meet action on the season with wins over Pittsburgh and Boston College. Last time out on Oct. 21-22, the Jackets pushed Notre Dame to the very final race, the 400 free relay, before falling to the Irish in ACC competition.
Sophomore Rodrigo Quadros Correia, who was tabbed the ACC Male Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com following the Notre Dame dual, registered four individual wins versus the Irish. He has the second best time in the ACC in the 200 IM with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 1:48.05, a top-three time in the 200 free with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 1:37.53, fifth in the 100 free at 44.51 and the seventh-best time in the ACC in the 100 back at 48.97.
Moises Loschi also ranks in the ACC in a number of events thus far this season. He has the top time in the ACC overall in the 200 breast with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 1:57.89 and ranks second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:23.44. He also has the fifth best time in the 100 breast with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 55.07 and the 10th best time in the conference in the 200 IM at 1:50.77.
Ben Southern has registered the second-best time in the ACC in the 200 fly event with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 1:47.04 and ranks sixth overall in the 100 fly with his time of 48.72, while Alex Kimpel has the fourth best time in the ACC in the 200 breast with his season-best time of 2:01.92 and Clay Hering who ranks 10th in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.31.
On the diving boards, Matt Casillas has led the way with top scores of 307.15 in the 1-meter dive and 314.75 in the 3-meter dive. Omar Eteiba will not be competing for the Jackets this week, as he will be competing at the Egyptian National Championships from Thursday through Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets’ women’s team is 2-2 on the year with dual meet wins over Georgia Southern and Pittsburgh.
Transfer Kaitlin Kitchens turned in a time of 23.51 in the 50 free last at the Pitt vs. Boston College double dual meet on Oct. 8, which is the top on the season and ranks 10th all-time in Tech history in the 50 free event, while freshman Emily Ilgenfritz turned in a time of 10:22:15 in the 1000 free which ranks as the seventh-best time in Tech history.
Ilgenfritz also has the top times for Tech in the 500 free (5:02.74) and the 200 fly (2:03.98).
Sophomore Iris Wang has the best times of the year for the Yellow Jackets in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.62, which ranks eighth overall in the ACC, and in the 100 free at 50.47, while Florina Ilie’s time of 1:04.09 in the 100 breast is a Tech season-best.
Both Andrea Demick and Carly Doi continue to lead the Yellow Jackets in diving, as Demick has the top score in the 3-meter springboard dive at 288.30, while Doi holds the top score at 278.85 in the 1-meter dive.
Both the men’s and women’s UGA squads sit atop of the CollegeSwimming.com Team Rankings, while the men’s team ranks seventh and the women’s team eighth in the CSCAA TYR Top-25 Coaches Poll.
Both the men’s and women’s teams are 2-0 overall in dual meet action on the season with wins over North Carolina and Florida.
