Chetcuti Breaks Three National Records For Malta At World Championships

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech swimmer Andrew Chetcuti set three Maltese national records this weekend, as the sophomore competed in the 2012 FINA World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. The Tech sprinter was an Olympian this summer for his home country of Malta.

Chetcuti set short-course national records in the 50m free, 100m free and 200m free at the FINA World Championships. He put down a time of 22.95 in finishing 50th out of 155 swimmers in the 50 free. He was clocked in 49.92 in taking 48th out of 147 entries in the 100 free, and was 54th overall in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.46.

Chetcuti, who is the first Malta swimmer in history to go under 50 seconds in the short-course 100m free, broke his own short-course records of 23.14 in the 50 free and 50.86 in the 100 free. The sophomore broke Edward Dingli’s previous national record of 1:54.32 in the 200 free.

Chetcuti also own the nation’s long-course records in all three sprint events, having established the 100m record of 51.67 at the London Olympic Games.
