THE FLATS
— Georgia Tech baseball got 7.0-shutout innings from starting pitcher Xzavion Curry, two spectacular catches in right field by Baron Radcliff and three RBIs apiece from both Chase Murray and Michael Guldberg to blank the Dartmouth Big Green 10-0 on Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The win pushes Tech to 3-2 on the season, while the Big Green start the year at 0-1.

On the heels of Connor Thomas quality start on Tuesday in which he allowed one run and struck out six over 7.0 innings in the 7-1 win at Georgia Southern, fellow classmate Curry (2-0) countered with 7.0-scoreless innings, striking out six and walking none to earn the win on Friday night.

Sophomore Andy Archer (1.0 IP) and freshman Joseph Mannelly (1.0 IP, K) combined to face the minimum six batters over the final two innings of play, using only 15 pitches for the back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to help secure the shutout win.

The Yellow Jacket arms allowed only one Dartmouth runner past second base for the entire game.

The bats broke out for the Jackets in a big way on Friday, as Tech tallied 13 hits, including three doubles and one home run, and drove in eight RBIs for the contest.

Murray (2-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBIs, run) and Tristin English (3-for-5, 2B, 2 runs) combined to go 5-for-9 with three doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored, while seniors Kel Johnson (2-for-4, RBI) and Wade Bailey (1-for-4, BB, RBI, 2 runs) combined to drive in two RBIs on the night.

However, the offensive surge was highlighted by an eighth-inning pinch hit three-run home run by Guldberg in his first-ever collegiate at bat, a shot down the left field line that put the Jackets in front by double digits at 10-0.

Guldberg is the first Jacket to hit a home run in his first career at bat since Blake Jackson did it in 2015.

Dartmouth had four guys with one single apiece in Sean Sullivan (1-for-4), Michael Calamari (1-for-3), Nate Ostmo (1-for-3) and Justin Fowler (1-for-3) in the loss.

The White and Gold broke the game open in the bottom of the second, as a Big Green fielding error with two outs allowed English to score from third and put the home team on top 1-0.

The error in the infield kept the inning alive for the Jackets who took full advantage, as two batters later Bailey drew an RBI bases loaded walk before Murray cleared the bases with a double just inside the first base bag and down the right field line to plate three and push Tech’s lead to 5-0 after two innings played.

Tech added a run in the third on an English double, a Johnson single and a Radcliff ground ball and then another run in the fifth on a Johnson two-out RBI single to increase its lead to 7-0 heading into the sixth inning.

Guldberg provided the final runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run shot to left field to put the final score at 10-0.

The Yellow Jackets (3-2) and Dartmouth (0-1) will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader. Game one will start at 1 p.m. and game two will follow approximately 45 minutes after the end of game one.
