March 11, 2012

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State’s Logan Jernigan pitched a no-hitter over six innings and No. 10 Georgia Tech suffered an 8-3 setback to the Wolfpack Sunday afternoon at Doak Field in Raleigh, N.C.

The victory allowed State to win the series over Tech for the second-straight time at Doak Field, as the Jackets slipped to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. The Wolfpack improved to 11-3, 2-1.

Jernigan set the Jackets down in order in the first and second innings, survived a five-walk third that saw Tech score twice to tie the game at 2-2, and gave up nothing more after that. Reliever DJ Thomas worked a hitless seventh inning before Daniel Palka’s single to right field broke up the no-hitter to lead off the eighth.

Sam Dove doubled to lead off the ninth and scored on Alex Cruz’s RBI single. But Tech’s shot at a comeback ended with runners at first and second.

With Jernigan in command, the Wolfpack added two runs in four of the first five innings to seize an 8-2 lead. Chris Diaz started the scoring with a two-RBI double in the first inning, Ryan Mathew had an RBI double in the third.

Tech starter Dusty Isaacs absorbed the loss (3-1), allowing five runs on three hits and six walks, while Jernigan fanned nine over his six innings and improved to 3-0. Thomas recorded his first save.

Tech matched its season low of four hits and lost for just the fifth time in the rubber game of an ACC series over the last four years (9-5-1).

The Jackets are back in action Tuesday at Russ Chandler Stadium to host Wagner. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
