THE FLATS – Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall picked up his 1,000th win as the head coach of the Yellow Jackets in a big way on Tuesday night, as the White and Gold defeated No. 6 Auburn 6-4 on a Midwestern-type chilly night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

In his 25th season on The Flats, coach Hall’s record now stands at 1,000-513-1 in the White and Gold uniform, while his overall record in 31 seasons as a collegiate head coach is 1,208-630-1.

The win is the Jackets’ first victory over a top-10 team this season and pushes Tech to 12-8 overall on the season. The loss drops Auburn to 19-3 on the year.

Fittingly it would be a quartet of first-year Jackets in Brant Hurter, Colin Hall, Luke Waddell and Michael Guldberg that would help lead the White and Gold to such a monumental program win on Tuesday night.

Hurter (1-1) earned his first career win as a Jacket, allowing just one hit over 5.0-scoreless innings, with four strike outs and three walks, while at the plate, Colin Hall (1-for-3, BB, RBI, run), Waddell (1-for-4, RBI, run) and Guldberg (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs, run) drove in five of the Jackets’ six runs in the win.

Auburn’s Jack Owen (0-1) picked up the loss, as he gave up six runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out three over 3.1 innings in his first collegiate start.

Offensively, the Tigers had four guys with two hits apiece led by Judd Ward (2-for-2, 2 RBIs) who entered the game in the seventh inning and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Tech took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double to center field by Tristin English in which the shallow routine fly ball fell to the grass in between three Auburn players to score Chase Murray from third.

The Jackets added a few more runs in the bottom of the fourth, as the White and Gold picked up a one-out RBI single off the bat of Colin Hall followed by a Waddell RBI single to center field to put the home team in front at 3-0.

With both Hall and Waddell on base, Guldberg hit a deep fly ball to right center field that went over the wall and hit off the speaker tower for a three-run shot, his second of the season, to give the Jackets a 6-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.

On the mound, Hurter was in control from the start, as the tall lefty pitched around a one-out single in the first, a two-out walk in both the second and the fourth innings, and a lead-off walk in the fifth to keep the hard-hitting Tigers off the scoreboard through the first five innings of play.

The Jackets then went to the bullpen where sophomore Andy Archer (2.0 IP, 4 hits, BB, 3 Ks) pitched out of trouble in both the sixth and seventh innings, stranding a total of five Tigers on the base paths to send the game to the eighth with the Jackets in front 6-0.

Auburn finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth as the Tigers took advantage of an error on a tough fly ball into the wind in left center field to eventually score two on a two-out RBI single by Ward.

Shortstop Will Holland followed with an RBI single to right to cut the Tech lead in half at 6-3.

In the ninth, the Tigers pushed across one more run on two infield singles and a pair of Jacket throwing errors, before a ground ball to Waddell at third base ended the game with the home team on top 6-4.

The Tigers stranded 13 runners on base for the night, while the Jackets, who were hampered by a number of mistakes no the base paths, left eight on base in the win.

The Yellow Jackets (12-8) will host Mercer (16-5) tomorrow night for a 6 p.m. start at Russ Chandler Stadium.
