THE FLATS – The Yellow Jackets’ Tristin English picked up his first career win, while fellow pitcher Andy Archer tallied his first career save on Sunday afternoon in Georgia Tech’s 4-1 home win over the Miami Hurricanes at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The win gave the Jackets the regular season series sweep of the Canes, their first sweep of Miami since 2011, which came in Coral Gables, Fla., and the first three-game sweep of UM at home in Atlanta, Ga. since 1967.

Tech improves to 17-11 and 6-6 in the ACC with the win. Miami falls to 12-15 overall and 6-6 in conference play with the loss.

English (1-0) was superb in his first career win on the mound, as the righty allowed just one run on five hits and one walk with a career-high seven strikeouts over a career-long 6.0 complete innings.

Archer (1) finished out the victory by throwing 3.0-scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk, while striking out two batters.

Miami’s Andrew Cabezas (2-3) was touched up for four runs on eight hits and three walks in the loss. He struck out a career-high 11 batters in a career-long 7.2 innings of work.

Seven of the nine hitters in the Tech lineup had a base hit on the day led by Wade Bailey (2-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI, 2 runs) and Colin Hall (2-for-4, 2B, run), who both had two hits apiece in the middle of the order. Freshman Baron Radcliff also had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

For the Canes, Romy Gonzalez (1-for-4, HR) had a solo home run, while Willy Escala (2-for-4) and Isaac Quinones (2-for-4) each had two hits apiece in the loss.

Just like the other two games on the weekend, the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first, as a Chase Murray single, a Kyle McCann double and a Bailey RBI single plated one run for the White and Gold in the first inning of play.

Miami knotted the game back up at 1-1 with one swing of the bat on a solo home run by Gonzalez in the top of the third, before both starting pitchers settled down to keep the offenses at bay over the next three innings.

However, in the bottom of the sixth the Jackets retook the lead as Bailey hit a one-out double to left field, advanced to third on a Hall infield single and then later scored from third on a wild pitch to put the score at 2-1 after six innings played.

The Canes put two on base in the top of the eighth on a walk and an infield single, but saw the Jackets’ Archer get a strikeout and a ground ball to second base to squash Miami’s inning and keep the home team on top by one at 2-1.

The outs proved to be huge, as the Jackets took advantage of a walk, a double, two Miami throwing errors, and a sacrifice fly to push across two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take at 4-1 lead into the ninth.

Archer sent the Canes down in order 1-2-3 in the ninth to seal the 4-1 win and secure the sweep for the Jackets over their Coastal Division foes.

On the weekend, the Jackets struck out 35 Miami hitters, walked six, hit one batter, gave up just four extra base hits and committed no errors in the sweep.

Tech (17-11, 6-6 ACC) will hit the road to face off with the Georgia Bulldogs (21-7, 7-2 SEC) on Tuesday night, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Athens, Ga.
