ATLANTA – Sophomore Connor Winn went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, and junior right-hander Brandon Cumpton allowed just three hits over six innings to lead the Gold team to a 9-1 victory in game one of the White and Gold World Series Monday at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Winn also added an RBI-double on the day, one of four doubles by the Gold squad as the side erupted for nine runs on ten hits in the series opener.
Cumpton, who ran a no-hitter into the fourth inning, tossed six scoreless innings and struck out six batters while issuing just one walk in the process. The Gold bullpen was tremendous as well, as juniors Taylor Wood and Kevin Jacob combined to allow just one run on one hit in three innings of relief.
The Gold squad jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after junior centerfielder Jeff Rowland lined a two-out double to right field scoring sophomore Jacob Esch from second and moving sophomore Evan Martin to third.
On the very next at-bat, Winn hit a three-run blast just inside the foul pole in left field off junior pitcher Deck McGuire to extend the lead to 4-0.
Troubles would continue for the White team in the bottom of the fourth as the Gold side strung together four runs on five hits, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back doubles by Martin, Rowland and Winn to make it an eight-run deficit.
Rowland went 2-for-4 with three RBI on the afternoon, both his hits coming on RBI doubles. Esch also went 2-for-4 on the day, scoring two runs in the process.
The White team scored its lone run in the seventh inning as sophomore Jake Davies ran home on a sac fly to centerfield by junior Cole Leonida. Davies had doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Leonida brought him home.
The series continues with game two on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium. All games are free and open to the public.
