Mark Teixeira To Throw First Pitch At Tech's Season Opener

Feb. 7, 2013

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have announced that Tech Hall of Famer and current New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for baseball’s season-opener on Friday, February 15 versus Akron at 4 p.m.

A 10-year pro, Teixeira is a five-time Gold Glove award winner, a three-time All-Star, and a World Champion on the 2009 Yankees club. He’s entering his fifth year in New York, after previous stops in Los Angeles and Atlanta. He made his MLB debut in 2003 with Texas.

“Mark has been a tremendous supporter of not only our baseball program, but the Institute as a whole for many years,” said head coach Danny Hall. “We are very fortunate to have guys like Mark, who continue to remain loyal to the Yellow Jackets.”

In his time on the Flats (1999-2001), Teixeira was a career .409 hitter with 36 home runs and 165 RBI in 140 career games. He helped lead the Jackets to both an ACC Championship and a Super Regional appearance during the 2000 season. The decorated third baseman received numerous awards as a collegiate ballplayer, including the Dick Howser Trophy in 2000 as the national player of the year. He was a first-team All-American, the ACC Player of the Year, a two-time first-team All-ACC pick and the ACC Rookie of the Year.

He was drafted by Texas with the fifth overall pick in 2001.

Teixeira has maintained a strong relationship with Georgia Tech, which has included the funding for the Mark C. Teixeira endowment scholarship in 2009. Tech added his No. 23 to the Honored Numbers wall at Russ Chandler Stadium in 2006 and, in 2011, inducted him into the Georgia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame.
