Johnson Tabbed to Academic All-District First Team

May 5, 2016

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech sophomore outfielder Kel Johnson was named to the Academic All-District 4 First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of Academic (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Johnson was one of 11 players named to the District 4 and was one of only two sophomores. He is the first Georgia Tech player to garner Academic All-District honors since Brandon Thomas in 2013.

First-team Academic All-District™ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Johnson is batting .331 with a team-leading eight home runs and team-best 41 RBI in 43 games. His 14 doubles rank second on the team, while his 57 hits are third-best.

A biology / pre-med major from Palmetto, Ga., Johnson was a 2015 All-ACC Academic Team selection as a freshman. He was also named to the ACC All-Freshman Team and was tabbed a Freshman All-American by both Louisville Slugger and D1Baseball.com.

No. 20 Georgia Tech returns to action Saturday – Monday when the Yellow Jackets host No. 3 Miami at Russ Chandler Stadium.
