THE FLATS - Point guard Jose Alvarado scored 12 of 19 points in the first half, and fellow freshman guard Curtis Haywood scored 12 of 15 in the second half, and Georgia Tech beat North Texas 63-49 at McCamish Pavilion Friday.

Senior guard Tadric Jackson scored 14 points off the bench in his first action since serving a three-game suspension for receiving benefits in violation of NCAA rules.

Georgia Tech (3-1) missed 16-of-22 shots to open the game before Alvarado and Haywood made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions with 1:20 left for a 22-19 lead that stood into halftime.

Haywood hit four of his 5 3-pointers in the second half, when Georgia Tech shot 55.6 percent from the field to pull away.

Roosevelt Smart paced North Texas (3-3) with 14 points and was the Mean Green's only double-digit scorer. After averaging 85.6 points on 46.9 percent shooting in five games, the visitors shot just 39.1 percent.

BIG PICTURE

North Texas: The Mean Green entered the game having outrebounded opponents by 16 and again won on the glass, 31-24, but North Texas hurt itself with 19 turnovers to Georgia Tech's six.

Georgia Tech: Sophomore guard Justin Moore served the second and final game of his two-game suspension for violating unspecified NCAA rules, and sophomore guard Josh Okokie - Tech's leading scorer last season - has two games remaining on his six-game suspension for receiving impermissible benefits.

North Texas will return to Denton to play Grambling State on Monday night before taking on traveling for another big road game Thursday at Oklahoma.

Georgia Tech will have three days off after playing three games in a six-day span, and then take on Northwestern Tuesday night in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.
