First off, you have to give Wofford credit. Coach Young is, obviously, one of the best in the game. Spartanburg and this community should be lucky to have one like you have in him. Not only is he one of the great coaches, he’s one of the good guys too. Everyone at Wofford should be thankful and grateful that you have a coach like that. I don’t know the Athletic Director, but Wofford should give Mike Young a lifetime contract. He’s as good as it gets. Secondly, I thought it was a really good basketball game. Magee hit some incredible shots when we played great defense, but it was just better offense. It’s just one of those things and one of those nights.
“I thought we played well for the most part, but when you give them 17 more shot attempts that was the thing. Also, 16 team turnovers really hurt us. Jose (Alvarado) missed a layup at the end and Tadric (Jackson) got called for traveling, and it was just one of those games. We played well for the most part, but just didn’t get it done. Over this break, we will have to get healthy and get reorganized and re-center everything and find out what we have to do to get better. It’s the first time I’ve ever lost three in a row as a head coach and I knew it had to happen at some point, but it wasn’t something I thought about for even a second because we have bigger things we need to focus on. I told everyone year two would be the hardest of the rebuild.”
On guarding Magee:
“We covered as much as we could. Curtis (Haywood II) had his hand there on a couple of them, but listen, the kid hit some tough shots. He’s not Steph Curry, but he sure makes some shots like Curry, at least in Curry’s college career. He’s an incredible shooter.”
WOFFORD HEAD COACH MIKE YOUNG
“Do I need to be here, or do you just want to talk to him (Magee)? I didn't do a darn thing.”
For Tech fans and people, hold on. Playing without (Josh) Okogie is is like us playing without him (Magee). That is really hard. Having to play a number of freshman, that is hard. I think they are doing a terrific job. They are in a ditch right now but Josh (Pastner) will pull them out of it and they will be fine. (Ben) Lammers is dinged up, they are going to be just fine. They get Okogie back at some point here soon and they can begin to build their team. It takes the wind out of your sails when a key contributor a great player, Josh (Okogie) is a great player, goes down. The Yellow Jackets are going to be just fine moving ahead and I will be pulling for those guys.
On Georgia Tech historically:
“We talked about it yesterday - this is a storied program. Bobby Cremins, Kenny Anderson, Mark Price, Harpring and all those guys. A final four. The Thriller Dome. We have been down this path and we are happy that we won. We go in to it with three, four things that we have to do to give ourselves a chance to win. We did three of the four. We will take it. It is a great win for our school and for this community.
On Fletcher Magee:
“What a special man, what a special performance. He is awesome. He’s got a lot of juice because of his work habits, but he’s also got a lot of juice because he is a wonderful person. He has earned it. He has worked on his body, gotten bigger and stronger, and he has worked on his game.”
On Magee’s game winner:
“We love him. It was an incredibly well executed play. Sometimes he is kind of like a child. You want them to do one thing, but they are going to do something you don't want them to do, and it works out okay (chuckles). We had something drawn up and if I could draw that up and explain what happened you would get a chuckle. He went up and stole the ball as an offensive player. We really and truly wanted to get out of his way and get him the ball, but that can be easier said than done. They know who we want taking that shot. I have seen him make that play at all hours of the night and all hours of the morning. He rose up on top of the guy and got it in the basket. It was just a huge shot.
