THE FLATS – Travis Jorgenson, a 6-foot guard from Columbia, Missouri, has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Georgia Tech, head coach Brian Gregory announced Wednesday.
Jorgenson played his senior year (2012-13) at New Hampton School in New Hampton, New Hampshire, helping lead the Huskies to a 17-12 record this past season while averaging a team-high 13.2 points and 5.0 assists per game while also averaging 4.1 rebounds and shooting 32 percent on three-point field goals. A 3-star prospect by Scout.com, he is ranked No. 138 among all 2013 prep seniors.
Jorgenson joins 6-8 forward Quinton Stephens from the Marist School in Atlanta and 6-2 Solomon Poole from Jacksonville, Fla., in Tech’s 2013 recruiting class. Poole is already in the Yellow Jackets’ program after graduating from high school in the fall and playing 21 games during the 2012-13 season.
“We’re really pleased that Travis is joining our program,” said Gregory. “He’s got a tremendous basketball IQ and the unique ability to create scoring opportunities for himself and others, qualities which are very important in our program as we continue to move forward.”
New Hampton School has produced 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year Olivier Hanlan of Boston College and other recent collegiate stars such as Brady Heslip of Baylor, Chris Gaston of Fordham and Brady Morningstar of Kansas. It has also produced NBA talent such as Darius Songaila (Wake Forest), Rashad McCants (North Carolina) and Lawrence Moten (Syracuse).
Prior to joining the New Hampton program, Jorgenson starred at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Mo., earning all-state honors from both coaches and media his sophomore and junior seasons. He helped the school to a three-year record of 71-18 and two top-8 state playoff finishes.
“He fits the mold of many of our other recruits in that he comes from a basketball family,” said Gregory. “He has played and been coached at the highest levels both in AAU ball and in high school.”
As a junior in 2011-12, despite missing 11 games after thumb surgery, Jorgenson averaged 16.5 points and 5.8 assists while hitting 44.8 percent of his three-point tries while leading Rock Bridge to a 25-4 record and the quarterfinals of the state Class 5 playoffs.
He averaged 11.1 points and 5.8 assists, hitting 45.2 percent of his threes, in leading Rock Bridge to a 26-6 mark and a fourth-place finish in the 2011 Class 5 playoffs. Jorgenson also led the team in assists (3.6) while averaging 7.6 points on a 20-6 Rock Bridge team.
