Tech Adds Three Post Players in Men's Basketball

June 24, 2014

THE FLATS – Demarco Cox, Nick Jacobs and Charles Mitchell, three men’s basketball players transferring from different institutions, have signed grant-in-aid papers to attend Georgia Tech and play for the Yellow Jackets, head coach Brian Gregory announced Tuesday.

All three transfers are post players. Cox is a 6-8, 276-pound center transferring from Mississippi, Jacobs is a 6-8, 245-pound forward transferring from Alabama, and Mitchell is a 6-8, 260-pound forward transferring from Maryland.

“We’re excited to have Demarco, Nick and Charles join our program,” said Gregory, who is beginning his fourth season at Tech. “They have all proven themselves at this level, and all three of them fit in well with our program. They’re all excited to be here.”

Cox, from Yazoo City, Miss., is expected to graduate from Ole Miss this summer, enroll at Tech for the fall semester and be immediately eligible to play for Tech in 2014-15 as a fifth-year graduate transfer. He played 33 games and started 16 for the Rebels in 2013-14, averaging 4.2 points and 4.9 rebounds in 16.6 minutes per game. He shot 54.3 percent from the floor and blocked 25 shots. He has averaged 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds over his Ole Miss career.

Jacobs, an Atlanta native who attended South Atlanta High School with former Tech star Derrick Favors, will sit out the 2014-15 season and play his final year in 2015-16. He averaged 8.4 points and 3.5 rebounds for Alabama in 2013-14 in 25 games, making 10 starts. In three seasons, Jacobs played in 93 games and made 57 starts for the Crimson Tide, averaging 7.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Mitchell, who prepped at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga., will request a waiver from the NCAA for immediate eligibility in 2014-15. He averaged 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds over 70 games, including 17 starts, in two seasons at Maryland. Last season, he averaged 6.5 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds over 32 games, and started the final 10 games for the Terps.

NCAA grants Heath immediately eligibility

Sophomore guard Josh Heath, who transferred to Tech from South Florida following the 2013-14 school year, will be able to play for the Yellow Jackets in 2014-15 after having his immediate eligibility waiver approved by the NCAA. He has three years of eligibility. Heath played in 17 games for the Bulls last season, starting the last four.
