Yellow Jackets' 2012-13 average attendance was 69th out of 345 in Division I
Aug 21, 2013
THE FLATS - Reflecting the growing interest in Georgia Tech men's basketball under head coach Brian Gregory, the Yellow Jackets' average game attendance increase last year over the previous season was the fourth best in the nation, according to the NCAA's annual attendance report.
In its first season in McCamish Pavilion, Tech drew an average of 7,365 spectators in 17 home dates, an increase of 2,436 per game over the year before (4,929 per game), when the Yellow Jackets split their home schedule between the Arena at Gwinnett and Philips Arena. This nearly 50 percent jump was the fourth-highest among Division I programs.
It was an increase of 1,270 per game over the 2010-11 season (6,095), Tech's final year in Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Among the top 30 teams in this category listed by the NCAA in its report, Atlantic Coast Conference foes NC State ranked second, Miami was sixth, Pittsburgh was 13th, and Wake Forest was 28th.
Tech's average attendance ranked 69th overall in 2012-13. Syracuse (2), North Carolina (4), NC State (12) and Maryland (25), each with arena capacities of more than 17,000, were the highest-ranked ACC teams. Pittsburgh was No. 40, followed by Wake Forest (44) and Virginia (46). Each of those arenas can seat in excess of 12,000. Tech's arena capacity of 8,600 would have ranked 52nd nationally.
In head coach Brian Gregory's third season on the Flats, Tech takes on the expanded ACC and a strong non-conference schedule with a team that includes four returning starters and five of last season's top six scorers back.
