THE FLATS – Successfully recruiting the New York area for the first time since the late 1990s, Georgia Tech received a letter-of-intent Wednesday from Brooklyn, N.Y., point guard Jose Alvarado, head coach Josh Pastner announced.
The reigning New York City Catholic League player of the year, the 6-foot point guard led Christ the King High School in Middle Village, N.Y., the No. 19 team in the nation entering the 2016-17 season, to the New York City title twice and his AAU team, the New York Rens, to the Peach Jam quarterfinals last summer. He follows a pair of legendary New York point guards into the Tech program — Kenny Anderson (1989-91) and Stephon Marbury (1995-96).
Alvarado, a three-star prospect described as a tough, gritty, pass-first point guard, is ranked the No. 9 player in the state of New York and No. 33 in the nation at his position by ESPN. He averaged 17 points and 6.5 assists per game as a junior for Christ the King, which fell in the Catholic League semifinals last season, and 11 points and five assists in his first season with the Rens.
“We’re excited about Jose joining the Georgia Tech family,” said Pastner. “He is a flat-out winner who is as tough and hard-nosed as any player out there in the 2017 class. He will be an excellent addition as a student-athlete here at Georgia Tech.”
