THE FLATS – Georgia Tech opens its 100th season of men’s basketball and its fourth season under head coach Brian Gregory Friday night (7 p.m.) when the Yellow Jackets take on state rival Georgia at McCamish Pavilion. It will be the 190th meeting in the series that dates back to 1906.
Tech, 16-17 and 6-12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference a year ago, is looking to win its fourth straight game in the series after posting wins in its last two trips to Athens and one at McCamish Pavilion two years ago. Georgia is entering its sixth season under head coach Mark Fox after posting a 20-14 record last year and a 12-6 mark in the Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs earned a bid to the NIT and lost in the second round.
Friday’s game will be televised on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network, airing throughout the state of Georgia on Fox Sports South. The Georgia Tech IMG Radio Network, with flagship station WCNN (680 AM/93.7 FM) will also carry the game, and that broadcast can be heard nationally on satellite radio (Sirius Ch. 108, XM Ch. 194).
The Georgia game begins a three-game homestand for the Yellow Jackets, which continues Tuesday night against Alabama A&M and next Friday vs. IPFW at McCamish Pavilion.
#5 Things to Know About Friday Night’s Game
• Friday’s game with Georgia will be the earliest calendar date that the two teams have ever met. It will be the first time the teams have met in a season opener since the 1977-78 season (Nov. 25, 1977).
• Tech has not opened a season against a current “Power 5” conference member since meeting Michigan in the 1993 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. Tech has not faced a “Power 5” foe at home to open a season since the Nov. 25, 1977 meeting vs. Georgia.
• Tech has not won four straight games in its series with Georgia since the 1962-63 and 1963-64 seasons, when the Jackets swept the Bulldogs in both meetings each season. Tech was in its final two seasons as a member of the Southeastern Conference at the time.
• Friday night’s game is a Gold Out (#GameDayGold). All Tech fans are encouraged to wear game day gold. Maggie Bridges, current Miss Georgia and a Tech senior in the Scheller College of Business from Brinson, Ga., will sing the National Anthem.
• Nineteen players from the state of Georgia dot the two teams’ rosters – 12 on the Georgia Tech roster, seven on the Georgia roster.
Series Notes vs. Georgia
• Georgia Tech has won three consecutive games over Georgia for the first time since winning three straight over the Bulldogs in 1992-93-94. All three of those games were played at the Omni arena in downtown Atlanta.
• Brian Gregory is the first Tech coach to win his first three meetings against Georgia since Roy McArthur, who won his first four during the 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons.
• Georgia Tech leads the overall series 104-86 and has played the Bulldogs more than any other opponent in its basketball history.
• The series has been played alternately on the respective schools’ campus since the 1995-96 season. Georgia holds a slight 10-9 lead in the series over that period.
• Before that December, 1995 meeting in Athens, the teams played 14 straight years at the Omni in downtown Atlanta, which was located on the site of the current Philips Arena. Tech went 8-6 against the Bulldogs in the facility, including eight of the last 10 before the neutral series ended.
• In the 19 on-campus meetings since 1995, each team has won twice on the other’s home court. Tech has won the last two meetings in Athens to put the series back “on serve,” while Georgia has won twice in Atlanta, both at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in 2000 and 2010.
