An athletic defender who took over as a starter at safety last season after Jamal Golden went down with an injury... can play any position in the secondary... began his career at Tech as a quarterback before moving to defensive back in late August, 2011.
2014 (junior): Recorded four solo tackles and forced his first fumble of his career vs. Georgia Southern (Sept. 13) ...Caught first career interception, had five tackles and one pass breakup at Tulane (Sept. 6) ... Had a team-best six tackles, including one for a loss of one yard, in the season opener against Wofford (Aug. 30).
2013 (sophomore): Played in all 13 games and started the final 10 games of the season... recorded 45 tackles, 32 solo tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and a half-sack... broke up four passes... enjoyed a terrific five-game stretch from mid-September to mid-October... registered four solo tackles at BYU (Oct. 12)... had four solo tackles the following week in a shutout of Syracuse (Oct. 19)... recorded a career-high seven tackles, including five solo tackles, at Virginia (Oct. 26)... had five solo tackles and a tackle for loss vs. Pittsburgh (Nov. 2)... recorded five tackles and a half-tackle for loss at Clemson (Nov. 14)... registered 1.5 tackles for loss and a half-sack vs. Alabama A&M (Nov. 23).
2012 (redshirt freshman): Played in all 14 games as a back-up at safety, and on special teams... recorded 12 tackles, 11 of which were solo tackles... recorded two solo tackles in the win at Maryland (Nov. 3)... had a career-high three tackles at North Carolina (Nov. 10).
2011 (true freshman): Redshirted.
High School: Monroe Area HS... coached by Matt Fligg... played quarterback for the Purple Hurricanes... led team to an 11-2 record and a state playoff appearance... ran the option... rushed for a school record 1,795 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior... had 13 rushing attempts of at least 50 yards... passed for 431 yards and five touchdowns... named all-state and was team MVP as a senior... two-time all-region selection... was on the academic honor roll all four years.
Personal: Full name is Demontevious Delirrhea Smith but goes by Demond (duh-MOND)... parents are Garry Smith and Shadonne Wright... has a younger brother, Degarrlow... born Nov. 14, 1993 in Rockdale, Ga... enjoys video games and basketball... began playing football at age 13... majoring in business administration.
