One of the top return specialists in college football and a candidate to start in Tech's deep secondary... was the only player in the NCAA last season to rank in the top 10 nationally in both kickoff returns and punt returns... ranked sixth in punt returns (14.59) and 10th in kickoff return average (28.35)... prior to 2012, Georgia Tech had not returned a kickoff since Oct. 31, 1998 -- Golden returned two kicks for touchdowns in `12... also a versatile defender who can play safety, corner or the nickel... was a talented dual-threat quarterback at Wetumpka (Ala.) High School -- the same school that produced former Yellow Jacket QB Tevin Washington... briefly joined the Yellow Jacket baseball team in the spring of 2012.
2012 (sophomore): Played in all 14 games and started at safety the first five games of the season ... emerged as Tech's primary kick and punt returner by late September... produced 952 all-purpose yards even though he did not play a snap on offense... ranked second on the team in interceptions (3) that he returned a team-high 52 yards... also had 24 tackles, three pass break-ups and one forced fumble... made his first career start in the nationally-televised game at Virginia Tech (Sept. 3) and responded with six tackles and a 21-yard kickoff return... made his first career interception five days later against Presbyterian (Sept. 8)... had punt returns of 56 and 28 yards vs. Miami (Sept. 22)... returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown vs. BYU (Oct. 27) -- Tech's first kick return for a TD since Oct. 31, 1998... had 174 yards total of five kickoff returns against the Cougars... topped that performance two weeks later at North Carolina when he returned a kick 100 yards for a TD (Nov. 10)... had 261 all-purpose yards against the Tar Heels... picked off a pass against Duke (Nov. 17)... had two punt returns for 56 yards and recorded a key interception against USC in the Hyundai Sun Bowl (Dec. 31).
2011 (true freshman): Played in 11 games as a true freshman... was a top back-up in the secondary, but most of his action came on special teams... recorded eight tackles (6 solos)... also had one pass break-up... made his career debut at Middle Tennessee State (Sept. 10) and had one tackle... recorded a tackle vs. Kansas (Sept. 17)... had two tackles (1 solo) in key road win at NC State (Oct. 1)... also had tackles vs. Maryland, Virginia and Utah.
High School: Wetumpka HS... played four seasons, including three as team captain, for coach Chad Anderson... played cornerback, quarterback and was a punt and kick returner... led the Indians to the class 6A area championship as a senior... earned all-state, all-area and all-metro honors... named Alabama's Old Spice Player of the Year, Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Football in the state of Alabama... produced 3,477 yards of total offense and 37 touchdowns... passed for 2,351 yards and 23 touchdowns... added 1,148 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns... also played four seasons of both basketball and baseball.
Personal: Full name is Javonta Jamal Golden... has an older brother, Tavares... cousin, Reggie Golden, was selected in the second round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago Cubs... born March 4, 1993 in Montgomery, Ala... majoring in management.
