A veteran, heady safety who could be one of the top defensive backs in the ACC... a two-year starter and a leader of the secondary... received high praise from the coaching staff when he received the 2012 Defensive Effort Award... suffered an injury in December that kept him out of the Hyundai Sun Bowl as well as spring practice.. has played in 39 career games with 29 starts... has five career interceptions, including at least one each of the past three seasons... has two career INT returns for touchdowns... enters 2013 with 211 career tackles -- the 14th-most ever by a Georgia Tech defensive back.. only one active ACC player (BC's Kevin Pierre-Louis) has more tackles... enrolled at Georgia Tech in January of 2010 and his participation in spring practice that season paid off... a good student who has made the Dean's List... a member of the 2012-13 Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board... has been active in the community in helping feed the homeless... comes from the same high school that produced former Georgia Tech great Calvin Johnson.
2012 (junior): Started the first 13 games of the season... suffered an injury that kept him sidelined for the Hyundai Sun Bowl... led the team in total tackles (87)... had 53 solo tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and one sack... had one interception, which he returned for a touchdown... forced one fumble, recovered one fumble and had one pass break-up... recorded eight tackles and a half-tackle for loss in the season opener at Virginia Tech (Sept. 3)... had two tackles for loss, including one sack, in the win over Virginia (Sept. 15)... registered eight tackles vs. Miami (Sept. 22)... had a career-high 14 tackles, including 10 solo tackles, plus two tackles for loss at Clemson (Oct. 6)... recorded his fifth career interception and returned it 22 yards for his second career pick-six vs. BYU (Oct. 27)... had nine tackles and recovered a fumble at North Carolina (Nov. 10).
2011 (sophomore): Started all 13 games at safety... his three interceptions tied for the team lead and ranked tied for 10th in the ACC... his 78 tackles (48 solos) ranked second on the team... had 3.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks... recovered two fumbles and broke up three passes... had an interception, a fumble recovery and four tackles in the second week of the season, at Middle Tennessee State (Sept. 10)... recorded an interception to go with seven tackles in a key home win vs. North Carolina (Sept. 24)... came up big in the win at NC State (Oct. 1)... picked off a Wolfpack pass and returned it 34 yards for his first career pick-six... had five tackles, including a tackle for loss, vs. Maryland (Oct. 8)... recorded eight tackles at Virginia (Oct. 15)... had seven tackles (5 solos) vs. Clemson (Oct. 29)... registered six tackles and recovered a fumble vs. Virginia Tech (Nov. 10)... had seven tackles (5 solos) at Duke (Nov. 19)... recorded eight tackles vs. Georgia (Nov. 26)... matched a career high with nine tackles, had 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack vs. Utah (Dec. 31).
2010 (true freshman): Played in all 13 games and started three times... started games 2-4... led all Tech freshmen -- true and redshirt -- in tackles with 46, including 28 solo tackles... had 3.0 tackles for loss, one sack, two fumble recoveries, one interception, one forced fumble and one pass break-up... forced a fumble and made four tackles in his first college game, vs. South Carolina State (Sept. 4)... made his first start, recorded his first career sack and made nine tackles at Kansas (Sept. 11)... had seven tackles, including five solo tackles, vs. NC State (Sept. 25)... recorded his first career interception and returned it 18 yards vs. Middle Tennessee State (Oct. 18)... had a tackle for loss and five solo tackles in the Independence Bowl vs. Air Force.
High School: Rated the 21st-best prospect in the state of Georgia by Rivals and 28th by Superprep... rated 9th on the AJC Fab 50 list.. earned all-state, all-region and all-county honors as a safety in 2009... broke school records for career and single-season interceptions... member of the academic honor roll... helped lead Sandy Creek to a state championship in 2009.. recorded 53 tackles and seven sacks as a junior in 2008... his stock rose with outstanding performances in the state playoffs.
Personal: Full name is Isaiah Nathan Johnson... born May 16, 1992 in Columbus, Ohio... son of Nathan and Dominica... has three siblings - Aaron Smith, Tyler Smith and Sierra Johnson... chose Tech because "it prepares you for life," Johnson said... made the ACC academic honor roll in 2011-12... made the Dean's List in the fall of 2012... majoring in management.
