A reserve wide receiver who played significant snaps on offense and took over the primary punt return duties in mid-November... spent the spring and August at the A-back position before moving back to receiver... was awarded with a scholarship prior to the start of the season by head coach Paul Johnson... nursed a shoulder injury in late September through mid-October... recorded six punt returns for an average of 6.2 yards per attempt... had a pair of punt returns for 11 yards, including one for 10 yards. vs. LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl (Dec. 31)... returned two punts for 19 yards in the 45-42 win at Georgia... made his first career start at wide receiver and returned a punt for 10 yards in the win over No. 23 Miami (Nov. 20)... had his first punt return of the season, for 10 yards, at North Carolina (Nov. 8)... saw action vs. Florida State (Nov. 1) -- the school where his father, Barry, was an All-American wide receiver... played briefly in the Mississippi State game (Sept. 20) and in the season opener vs. Jacksonville State (Aug. 28)... a solid reserve and part-time punt returner throughout his career... caught a touchdown pass in the April 19 T-Day Game... an outstanding student who has made multiple appearances on the ACC Academic Honor Roll... missed the first week of spring practice in 2008 with the flu and pneumonia.
2007
Played in 11 games with action as a reserve receiver and also as a punt returner... had no pass receptions... returned eight punts for an average of 12.0 yards per return... returned two punts for 32 yards, including a long of 18, and made one special teams tackle in the season opener at Notre Dame (Sept. 1)... had six punt returns totalling 64 yards at Virginia (Sept. 22).
2006
Began the season as Tech's punt returner, then was injured at midseason... returned to the lineup for the final four games... returned punts in seven games and had 16 returns for a 7.6-yard average... longest return was a 22-yarder against Samford... saw action at receiver against Samford and caught one pass for six yards.
2005
Saw some action on special teams, including one punt return for eight yards against Duke.
2004
Redshirted after joining the program as a walk-on.
High School
Two-year letterwinner as a wide receiver and defensive back at Jesuit High School in Tampa, Fla., playing with current Tech teammate A.J. Smith and Mike Peterson... also lettered three years in track as a hurdler and sprinter, helping Jesuit to 2003 state title... All-county first chair tenor saxophone.

Full name is Andrew Whitacre Smith... born May 3, 1986... majoring in management... parents are Barry Smith and Diane Smith... father, Barry, was an All-America wide receiver at Florida State and was the Green Bay Packers' first-round draft pick in 1973... Barry went on to play four years (1973-76) in the NFL with Green Bay and Tampa Bay... Andrew has been named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll four times -- 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007 and 2007-08... he will graduate with honors in December.
