Blue Tops White, 24-14, in Georgia Tech Spring Game

THE FLATS – Sophomore quarterback Lucas Johnson threw for 143 yards and a touchdown and added another score on the ground to lead his Blue squad to a 24-14 win over the White team in Georgia Tech football’s annual spring game on Friday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Highlights

  • Johnson engineered three second-quarter touchdown drives to give the Blue team a commanding 21-7 halftime lead. He accounted for two of the three touchdowns himself with a 12-yard run and a 33-yard pass to senior A-back Clinton Lynch. On the other scoring drive, his 53-yard pass to senior wide receiver Brad Stewart set up a two-yard touchdown plunge by junior B-back KirVonte Benson.

Sophomore kicker Brenton King madeit 24-straight points for the Blue when he drilled a 40-yard fieldwith plenty of room to spare in the third period. Johnson, who wasmoved from the White team to the Blue on Friday due to an illnessthat kept senior QB TaQuon Marshall fromparticipating in the game, accounted for 149 of his team’s 276total yards and two of the winning squad’s three touchdowns.Johnson’s favorite target was Stewart, who hauled in three ofJohnson’s five completions for a game-high 100 yards. SophomoreJoseph Macrina, who began the spring as a longsnapper before moving B-back following the transfer of QuaideWeimerskirch, led the Blue with 29 rushing yards. Defensively, Bluelinebacker Tre’ Jackson led all playerswith eight tackles, including a tackle for loss. He also recovereda fumble. Sophomore linebacker JaquanHenderson and true freshman QuezJackson had two tackles for loss apiece for theBlue. For the White, sophomore B-back JerryHoward led all rushers with 64 yards on theground. He opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run in thefirst quarter. Redshirt freshman B-back JordanPonchez-Mason scored the White’s other touchdownon a one-yard run in the fourth quarter. Senior linebackerBrant Mitchell led the White with sixtackles, including an eye-popping five behind the line ofscrimmage. Sophomore defensive back TariqCarpenter had an interception on the third playof the game for the White. In all, Georgia Tech’s new 3-4 defenseforced two turnovers (one for each team) and tallied 14 tackles forloss (eight for the White, six for the Blue) in 110 total plays. Onthe flip side, despite playing without its returning startingquarterback and four starting offensive linemen, the offense rackedup 458 yards of total offense (276 for the Blue and 182 for theWhite) in the condensed game, which featured a running clock in thesecond half. Key players who missed the game due to injury includedoffensive linemen Parker Braun, KennyCooper, Andrew Marshall andJake Stickler and defensive backsA.J. Gray and JalenJohnson. Senior defensive lineman DesmondBranch missed the contest so he could attend hisbrother’s wedding.

After a break for final exams, Georgia Tech will enter its summer training program in preparation for fall camp, which opens in August.
