Football Writers Tab Harvin III as Freshman All-American

Jan. 8, 2018

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech punter Pressley Harvin III added to his impressive list of accolades as a true freshman on Monday when he was named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) freshman all-America team.

Harvin III leads all NCAA Division I FBS true freshmen, ranks 16th overall nationally and is second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in punting average at 44.1 yards per punt. Sixteen of his 50 punts (32 percent) were downed inside the 20 yard line, 13 (26 percent) traveled 50-plus yards and just 21 (42 percent) were returned.

Harvin’s 44.1-yard average was a Georgia Tech freshman record, breaking the old freshman mark of 43.8 yards per punt, set by Dan Dyke in 1999. It was also the fifth-best single-season average in program history.

A third-team all-ACC selection, Harvin became the first Georgia Tech freshman to earn first-, second- or third-team all-conference honors since Calvin Johnson (first team) and Travis Bell (second team) in 2006.

Harvin is only the third Yellow Jacket named to the FWAA’s freshman all-America team since its inception in 2001, joining place kicker Travis Bell (2004) and guard Will Jackson (2010).

A 13-person panel of nationally prominent college football experts represented each of the NCAA Division I FBS conferences and independents in the selecting the 2017 FWAA freshman all-America team, which consists of just 30 student-athletes (20 true freshmen and 10 redshirt freshmen).

In addition to the FWAA honors, Harvin was also named to ESPN’s 2017 true freshman all-America team.
