Durant Brooks' High School Jersey to be Retired

Jan. 22, 2009

MACON, GA - - Current NFL player, and Tattnall Square Academy alumnus Durant Brooks will have his football jersey retired Friday night at the Tattnall Athletic Complex. The ceremony will take place between the varsity girls and boys basketball games against Stratford Academy.

Brooks, a 2003 Tattnall graduate, was a sixth round draft pick by the Washington Redskins in 2008. He punted for Washington in six games producing a 39.6 average. He is currently on the Green Bay Packers' roster.

The former Trojan tight end earned All-State honors in 2001, was an All-Region selection three times and caught 14 career TD passes. He averaged 34.49 yards per punt and still holds the longest punt in Tattnall history - a 62-yarder against Augusta Christian in 2001.

Following his prep career, Brooks played for Georgia Military Junior College lettering twice and averaging nearly 40 yards per punt. He then went to Georgia Tech as a preferred walk-on. Brooks earned a scholarship and became the nation's top punter by winning the 2007 Ray Guy Award.

Brooks produced a tremendous career in only two years as a Yellow Jacket. He was a 2007 First team All-American, two-time First team All-ACC, played in the 2007 Senior Bowl and ranks first in all-time career punting at Georgia Tech and in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In 2006, he was a second team All-American and Ray Guy Award Finalist.

At Georgia Tech, Brooks averaged 45.31 yards on 144 punts for 6,525 yards. He dropped 65 punts inside the 20-yard line and produced a career long of 77 yards.

Brooks played basketball for his father, Paul Brooks, who still leads the Tattnall boys varsity basketball program. Brooks ended his Tattnall hardwood career as the school's leading three-point shooter.
