Demetra Named New “Voice of the Yellow Jackets”

Aug. 15, 2016

THE FLATS – Andy Demetra, a 13-year broadcasting veteran who has been the voice of South Carolina men’s basketball and baseball since 2009, has been hired as Georgia Tech’s new play-by-play announcer, deputy athletics director Brett Daniels announced on Monday.

Demetra, 35, will serve as the “Voice of the Yellow Jackets” for football and men’s basketball radio broadcasts on the Georgia Tech IMG Sports Network, beginning with Tech’s Sept. 3 football opener versus Boston College in Dublin, Ireland. Demetra will also host the Yellow Jackets’ football and men’s basketball coach’s shows on both radio and television, emcee GTAA events and have a role in other Georgia Tech broadcasting and publicity initiatives.

“We’re excited to have Andy join our broadcast team,” Daniels said. “Over the years, Georgia Tech has been fortunate to have some of the best play-by-play announcers in the business. We believe that our fans will feel the same about Andy, as he is one of the industry’s top young broadcasters. He brings a tremendous amount of experience in collegiate athletics and a reputation as one of the hardest workers in broadcasting.”

At South Carolina, Demetra was the play-by-play voice of men’s basketball and baseball for seven seasons on the 28-station Gamecock IMG Sports Network. His USC career was highlighted by calling the Gamecocks’ baseball national championships in 2010 and 2011. In addition to his radio duties, he also served as the play-by-play announcer for South Carolina telecasts, including football, on Fox Sports Southeast.

In all, Demetra spent 10 seasons as a member of the South Carolina broadcast team, beginning his career as the play-by-play voice of Gamecock women’s basketball from 2003-06. He was honored as the South Carolina Broadcasters Association Radio Sportscaster of the Year in 2005 and 2006, becoming the youngest recipient in the 60-year history of the award.

Between his two stints at USC, Demetra worked at IMG College headquarters in Winston-Salem, N.C. from 2006-09. During his three years with IMG, he gained extensive experience calling ACC football as the play-by-play announcer for the ACC National Game of the Week, which aired nationally on XM Radio and 50-plus stations nationwide. He also called the Big East National Game of the Week for men’s basketball and was the host of the ACC’s official weekly radio show (“Inside the ACC”) as a member of the IMG staff.

His on-air credits also include calling men’s basketball on the SEC Network, men’s and women’s basketball on the Pac-12 Network and the NAIA football national championship game on CBS Sports Network.

Aside from his broadcasting experience, Demetra is known for his ability to connect with fans across multiple media platforms. During his time with South Carolina, he authored columns for the athletics department’s Spurs and Feathers booster club magazine and maintained a @GamecockRadio Twitter account that boasted more than 15,000 followers.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Georgia Tech family,” Demetra said. “Whether it was Brandon Gaudin, Wes Durham, Brad Nessler, Al Ciraldo or a man I’m familiar with at South Carolina, Bob Fulton, Georgia Tech is the home of gold-standard radio broadcasters. I’m honored to be trusted with that tradition and I look forward to sharing my passion for play-by-play with Yellow Jacket fans. I can’t wait for all the great moments we’ll get to experience together.”

Demetra (pronounced duh-MEH-truh), an Oak Brook, Ill. native, graduated summa cum laude from Syracuse University in 2003 with bachelor’s degrees in broadcast journalism and Spanish literature.
