Georgia Tech (3-2, 2-1 ACC) looks to bounce back from its second heartbreaking loss of the season when it hosts Wake Forest (4-2, 1-2 ACC) for the Yellow Jackets' annual homecoming game on Saturday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Georgia Tech saw the opportunity to grab sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division slip away last Saturday in a 25-24 loss at No. 11/10 Miami (Fla.). The Yellow Jackets led for much of the game before the Hurricanes capped a 15-play, 85-yard drive with a 24-yard game-winning field goal with four seconds to go in the ballgame.
The one-point loss was Georgia Tech's second of the season. The Jackets also suffered a 42-41, double-overtime defeat to Tennessee in the season-opening Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Labor Day evening at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta.
Just five games into the season, Georgia Tech has already tied an ACC record with two one-point losses. The Jackets are the first ACC team with two one-point defeats in a season since Clemson and Duke both had a pair of one-point losses in 2006.
Despite last week's setback, the Yellow Jackets remain firmly in the hunt for the Coastal Division title and a berth in the ACC Championship Game. With six games still remaining, the Jackets are only a game behind Miami (5-0, 3-0 ACC) and a half-game behind Virginia (5-1, 2-0 ACC) in the Coastal Division standings.
Of the 300 minutes that Georgia Tech has played in regulation this season, it has only trailed for a total of 20:43 overall. The Yellow Jackets have trailed for just four seconds in regulation after halftime -- the final four seconds of last Saturday's 25-24 loss at No. 11/10 Miami (Fla.).
Georgia Tech is 52-15-1 all-time in homecoming games, dating back to the Institute's first homecoming in 1949. The Yellow Jackets have won four-straight and 19 of their last 21 homecoming contests.
The primetime affair is Georgia Tech's first Saturday night home game since its legendary 22-16 triumph over No. 9 Florida State (the "Miracle on Techwood Drive") on Oct. 24, 2015.
Wake Forest needs a win to keep its hopes for an ACC Championship Game berth alive. After a 4-0 start, the Demon Deacons have dropped two-straight to perennial ACC Atlantic Division powers Florida State (26-19) and Clemson (28-14).
