Dorsey Levens, who burst on to the national scene as a member of the Green Bay Packers’ Super Bowl XXXI championship team, will be the Honorary Captain for Saturday’s Homecoming game. Georgia Tech (6-2, 3-2) hosts ACC Coastal Division foe Virginia (4-4, 2-2) for its 66th Homecoming Game at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Levens didn’t begin his career in Atlanta. In fact, a native of upstate New York, he began his college career at Notre Dame, where he was competing for playing time with future NFL running backs Ricky Watters, Jerome Bettis, Rodney Culver, Reggie Brooks, and Anthony Johnson. After a knee injury and 185 career yards in two seasons with the Fighting Irish, Levens transferred to Georgia Tech, sitting out the 1991 season.
In two seasons at Georgia Tech, he finished with 1,036 rushing yards and 10 TDs, including 823 yards and eight scores as a senior in 1993, when he was named first-team All-ACC. He was team captain for the 1993 Yellow Jackets squad.
A fifth-round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers in 1994, Levens was Edgar Bennett’s primary backup. In the 1996 NFC Championship game against the Carolina Panthers, Levens rushed for 88 yards and caught five passes for 117 yards and a TD for a 30-13 win. In Super Bowl XXXI, Levens led the Packers with 61 rushing yards and a Super Bowl title. In 1997, Levens rushed for a career-high 1,435 yards and was voted to the Pro Bowl. However, another knee injury during the 1998 season limited the remainder of his career.
He would rush for 1,034 yards with the Packers in 1999 and was featured on the cover of EA Sports Madden NFL 2000. After leaving the Packers in 2001, he played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002 and again in 2004, and the New York Giants in 2003.
Levens graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in industrial management. A member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, Levens is the CEO of Levens Communications and The TakeOver Project. Most recently, Levens has started a youth training program called, I am… Momentum, which is designed to help our youth reach their maximum potential in speed, agility, strength, and conditioning. He resides in Atlanta and has two kids.
