A Needed Weekend Off

With his first weekend off from football since late July, guess what Omoregie Uzzi did this weekend?

More pigskins, baby!

The Yellow Jackets didn’t have a game this weekend, and coach Paul Johnson gave the team Friday afternoon and all of Saturday and Sunday off in the wake of their stirring 31-17 win last weekend over then-No. 6 Clemson.

So when asked Friday what he had in store for his weekend away, Uzzi said, “I definitely try to stay in tune with football. The game is never far away. I’ll definitely watch Bama-LSU.”

There was hardly evidence of fatigue last week as the Jackets beat the Tigers, but in Tech’s two prior games – losses on the road – the Old Gold & White looked a bit gassed. Grinding for about 12 weeks without a break of more than a day at a time, the Jackets are using this weekend to rest their bodies and their brains.

“We needed a break,” Uzzi said. “We’re able to get off our feet a little bit, get in tune with what we need to do. I’m going to try spend some time with my family. My cousin plays for Arabia Mountain.”

Arabia Mountain lost at Riverwood Friday night, but Uzzi can take solace.

Down time has allowed all the Jackets greater access to their books. They love that because, as Uzzi said, “You can get a little extra reading done and make sure that I’m you’re set up for the rest of the semester.”

Tonight, it’s back to work on two levels.

Thursday’s game against Virginia Tech may pivot the Coastal Division, although even if the Jackets win out they’re going no need Virginia to lose to either Duke, Florida State or Virginia Tech.

How about that? The Jackets are sweating a Virginia squad that’s lost to two ACC teams that Georgia Tech beat (North Carolina and N.C. State) because the Cavaliers beat Georgia Tech and the other ACC team to beat the Jackets (Miami).

“I’m pretty excited about the game. Iit’s always a tough game when we play VT,” Uzzi said. “It will be one of the biggest games of my life. I’m already thinking about who I’ve got to go against, and the defense they play.” Some break, huh?
