Feb. 18, 2013

THE FLATS – Ollie Schniederjans shot a 3-under-par 69, and Anders Albertson added a 2-under-par 70 Monday for Georgia Tech, but the 8th-ranked Yellow Jackets slipped a spot to fifth place after 36 holes at the Puerto Rico Classic.

Seth Reeves shot even-par 72 and Richard Werenski added a 74 as the Yellow Jackets posted a 3-under-par team score of 285, one stroke better than their opening round Sunday. But Tech fell further behind Monday after sixth-ranked Alabama went 10-under-par on the Rio Grande Country Club’s River Course, Oklahoma went 11-under and No. 20 SMU went 10-under for the round.

The Crimson Tide and the Sooner are tied atop the leaderboard at 19-under-par 557, with the Mustangs (-11) eight shots back in third place. Ninth-ranked Georgia (-6) slipped ahead of Tech into fourth place after posting an 8-under-par round Monday. The Jackets (-5) are one shot behind the Bulldogs. No. 21 Clemson (-1), which fell back with a 6-over-par 294 Monday, is the only other team in red figures after 36 holes.

“We had a chance for a very good round today,” said Tech head coach Bruce Heppler. “We got off to a solid start on the most difficult part of the course, but didn’t get anything out of the holes where you can really make some birdies. We are still looking for the first really good one of the spring.”

Schniederjans, a sophomore from Powder Springs, Ga., is tied for sixth place individually at 4-under-par 140, three shots off the pace of Eduardo Castiello of Oklahoma, who added a 69 Monday to his opening 68, and Mikey Moyers of Virginia Tech, who has shot rounds of 70-67. They are tied at 7-under-par 137 for 36 holes and are one stroke ahead of Alabama’s Scott Strohmeyer (69-69). NC State’s Albin Choi and SMU’s Austin Smotherman are tied for fourth place at 139 (-5).

Schniederjans started at the fifth hole in the shotgun start, making six birdies and three bogeys in his first 14 holes, but played his last four even. Albertson, a sophomore from Woodstock, Ga., who started at No. 7, birdied 17, 18, 4 and 5, but bogeyed no. 6, his finishing hole.

Reeves was 4-under-par through his first 11 holes, but took a double-bogey at 17 and bogeys at 2 and 3 coming in. Andrews had a similar finish with two bogeys in his final five holes and finished with a 75 that did not count for the Jackets. Werenski’s round included a bogey, a double bogey and one birdie.

The final round of the Puerto Rico Classic tees off at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
