Tech Alone in 2nd at Puerto Rico Classic

Rio Grande, Puerto Rico – Anders Albertson shot a 6-under-par 66, while Ollie Schniederjans and Bo Andrews added a pair of 69s for Georgia Tech Monday as the 3rd-ranked Yellow Jackets took sole possession of second place after two rounds of the Puerto Rico Classic.

Richard Werenski shot 73 for Tech, which posted an 11-under-par round of 277 Monday and has a 36-hole total of 555, 10 shots behind Alabama, the nation’s top-ranked team. The defending national champions posted a 16-under-par 272 Monday and completed two rounds 545 strokes, 31-under-par.

No. 7 Georgia is in third place at 559 (-17), followed by Clemson (-13), Purdue (-5) and No. 9 Virginia Tech (-3). Five of the nation’s top 10 teams are competing in this event, as well as five others in the top 50.

“We fought hard today in conditions that were not that easy,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “We’re in the final groups for tomorrow’s round, which is where we want to be every time.”

Andrews, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., went bogey-free for the second straight day and completed 36 holes in 7-under-par 137, tied for fourth place with Albertson, six strokes behind Alabama’s Robby Shelton (131, -13), who followed up his opening 67 with a 64 Monday and holds a three-stroke lead over first-round leader Adam Schenk of Purdue (-10). Georgia’s Joey Garber (-9) is in third place.

Albertson, a junior from Woodstock, Ga., birdied six of the nine holes on the back side of the River Course at Rio Mar Country Club after carding three birdies and three bogeys on the front. Schniederjans, a junior from Powder Springs, Ga., opened his round with a bogey but went 4-under-par after that and is tied for 10th place overall at 5-under-par 139.

The tournament concludes with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday.
