Schniederjans Leads, Tech 2nd at ACC Championship
Tech junior fires career-best 65 to grab three-stroke lead
April 25, 2014
THE FLATS - Ollie Schniederjans fired an opening-round 65 Friday afternoon to take a three-stroke lead individually, while Georgia Tech posted an even-par 288 and sits in second place at the 61st Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship.
The No. 2-ranked Yellow Jackets also counted a 1-over-par 73 from Bo Andrews, a 74 from Seth Reeves and a 76 from Anders Albertson Friday for their 288, four strokes behind No. 19 Florida State, which got a 4-under 68 from Hank Lebioda and posted a team score of 4-under 284 for the round.
Tech played the front nine of the 7,102-yard, par-72 Old North State Club in 6-under-par, and at one point was 7-under-par with a three-stroke lead. Tech lost eight shots to par over the last seven holes as gusty winds and intermittent rain set in before recovering with a pair of birdies on the finishing par-5 18th hole.
"Conditions got really difficult over the last 11 holes," said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. "Fortunately, Ollie was able to finish a great round and keep us in the tournament. We're looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
Schniederjans was the only one of the Yellow Jackets to avoid trouble down the stretch. The Tech junior from Powder Springs, Ga., birdied four holes with no bogeys on the back, three of them on the final four holes to complete his best round of the year and his best round in seven times around the Old North State Club.
"Based on the conditions with the last 11 holes, it was one of the best rounds I've ever seen," Heppler said. "It was a pretty incredible round of golf."
Clemson (289, +1) is one shot behind Tech in third place, followed by Wake Forest (+2), Boston College and North Carolina (+3).
Saturday's second round begins at 8:30 a.m., and Tech will tee off at 11:30 a.m. with FSU and Clemson. Live online streaming coverage of the round is being offered on the ACC Digital Network beginning at 2 p.m.
