Rocky Face, Ga. – Ollie Schniederjans fired a career-low 8-under-par 64, which included a hole-in-one, and Anders Albertson added a 5-under-par 67 Saturday as No. 3-ranked Georgia Tech leaped into a five-way tie for first place after 36 holes at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.

Tech, which closed out Friday’s round sluggishly after a weather delay, rebounded Saturday to post the day’s second-best team round, a 12-under-par 276. Schniederjans, the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur player, put together a flawless round with no bogeys, seven birdies and his first collegiate ace. Albertson shook off his Friday 77 in fine fashion with four birdies and an eagle to offset one bogey.

Drew Czuchry, a senior playing in only his fifth collegiate event, continued to carry over his superb play in the team’s qualifying tournament by carding a 1-under-par 71. Freshman Jacob Joiner added a 74 for the Yellow Jackets’ other counting score.

The Jackets began the day in ninth place, 12 strokes off the lead, and ended it with a share of the lead, after being one of the first teams off. Auburn, with the best round of the day at 13-under-par 275, made the biggest move. They are tied with top-ranked Alabama, (-5 Saturday), LSU (-1 Saturday) and first-round leader Kennesaw State (even par Saturday) at 7-under-par 576 for 36 holes.

“We didn’t talk much after the round yesterday. It was a bad finish to a long day, and we just wanted to come back today and get back on track,” said Schniederjans, the reigning ACC Player of the Year. “We had some really good rounds. Today was very positive.”

At 8-under-par 136 for 36 holes, Schniederjans moved into the individual lead in a bid to defend his 2013 title in this event, taking a two-shot edge over Alabama’s Robby Shelton, the world’s No. 2-ranked amateur, who shot 68 Saturday and stands at 7-under-par 137.

“I just wanted to put the pedal down all day today to make up for [Friday],” added Schniederjans. “I felt like a threw four shots away after the delay. I hit the ball pretty well. I hit a couple of bad tee shots, but I had good rhythm and got it clicking. I knew I had this in me, and I’m glad I could put it together. I hit good iron shots and putted well. My longest par pout was a foot or two feet.”

The senior from Powder Springs, Ga., wasted no time Saturday, making birdie on his first two holes and adding another at the fifth. At the par-3 eighth, which measured 243 yards, he holed a 5-iron off the tee. He followed that with another birdie at No. 9, then added two more on the back nine.

“The pin was in the back right of the green,” said Schniederjans. “I hit it smooth, didn’t have to hit it hard, a chippy 5-iron. The ball landed on top of the hill and rolled in like a putt.”

Czuchry is in a tie for 20th place at 1-under 143. Sophomore Vincent Whaley, competing as an individual, shot 69 Saturday and is in a tie for 16th place at 2-under-par 142.

Tech is paired with sixth-place Clemson and Kennesaw State for Sunday’s second round and will tee off at 8:15 a.m.
